Ride Karma

I never got a driver's license until I was 24. This may be typical for many city dwellers, but I grew up in a small town, and the car was freedom. But, with my low vision, I was told I would never drive a car ( Read more... )

I understand "ride karma" very, very well, having put off my own drivers license until after college. I also had the "carma" of driving a minivan, so I hauled a lot of stuff around (especially to Pennsics) even if it wasn't as much so as some pickup owners I've known. It's been trailing off gradually rather than there being any single moment of epiphany, but trading in the minivan on the (much smaller) new car has helped.

(Not, as you say, that I'm averse to giving rides, but I know what you mean about the sense of obligation.)

Ya know, even before I got to the end of this, I was thinking, "I think you're free and clear of the karmic debt."

And also that if you'd called us from the airport, we would have picked you up. :-)

God, I hope you don't do things for us, when you do them, out of a sense of karmic obligation. I wouldn't want you to be feeling that way.

As I said, I never did anything I really didn't want to do. It was just an internalized idea that I wasn't even conscious of most of the time.

Given the traffic on the freeway, it probably would have taken as long for you to drive down and drive me back than it did for me to take the bus. The roads were nasty last night. As it was, I got a couple of hours of uninterrupted reading done.

I, too, grew up in a small town, and did not get my license until I was 26 (qweeeejk's mom made me get it). I have no problems giving rides to those who ask. And, I even stay outside the door until the person gets inside (a habit which I picked up from my dad).

My Ride Karma Debt is primarily to my family because they were the ones who drove me around to all the appointments when The Godling was young, and took me shopping and so on. It is slowly being worked off - mainly due to mom not having any desire to drive in winter, during rush hour, when the day ends in y.....
