[Background] (Spoilers and tl;dr ahead)
Travis' life was pretty normal until he won a Beam Katana on an online auction. Since then, he became an assassin for hire. One of his jobs was to kill Helter-Skelter, also known under the alias of Drifter. Upon accomplishing this a mysterious woman, Sylvia Christel, shows up to tell him that he had just killed the 11th top ranked assassin in the United Assassin's Association, thus earning him that rank. This is when she plants the idea of Travis aiming for number one in the Association.
In the beginning, he seemed psyched by the idea of the being number one in the UAA that he immediately went off to kill the next ranked assassin (Death Metal). After the fight, Sylia arrives once again to congratulate Travis for the kill and for becoming 10th. He asks if he gets anything else besides the rank and is disappointed when he is told that all he would be given is "some money to help pay the bills." She also warns him that he is now a target for those who want to rise in the ranks and replace him. After feeling as if he was set-up, he asks if the promise they made would be kept. It is not said what this promise is at the time, Sylvia simply replies that there is nothing the association could not do. Travis then asks to make a deal with Sylvia in which she would sleep with him when he becomes number one. Her answer is vague and noncommittal.
In his fight with Dr. Peace, the 9th ranked assassin, he learns that his entry fee was used to pay for some of the Doctor's requests. They both admitted that they were both strongly attracted to blood thus being where they are now, Travis even going to the extent of saying that there was nothing more gratifying than fighting your own kind. He rises in rank after the kill and tells Sylvia to notify him when the next battle has been arranged.
During the 8th ranking battle against Shinobu, she accuses him of killing her father. Travis explains that he never met the man in person and that he had looked up to Jacobs so much that he had watched his tapes until they wore out. He spares her life despite her pleas to finish her off and leaves saying that he was willing to fight her in a rematch.
The 7th ranked assassin, Destroyman, didn't seem like much to Travis at first, what with his mailman attire and courteous attitude. He carelessly let down his guard during this battle especially when Destroyman changes into his bizarre superhero get-up and when they shake hands. However, Travis stands back up, seemingly unscathed and goes on with the fight. As Sylvia announces his new rank, he says that she should look her best when he ranks number one. This is the first time she seems to actually consider the deal much to Travis' delight.
Holly Summers begins the 6th ranking battle by interrogating Travis about death. He promptly replies that it's never crossed his mind, and she tells him that he is still just a bud, that it was disappointing that he was just another ordinary assassin. It seems that she has the upper hand in the beginning but soon as the tables turn on her. This however, sheds light on why Travis spared Shinobu's life. He does not have the heart to kill women. Holly says that he would not be able to reach the top that way but accepts defeat nevertheless. She leans toward Travis and asks that he promises never to forget her before pulling out a live grenade and placing it in her mouth. Travis tries to stop her but isn't able to. He holds her body in an embrace, asking for forgiveness for shaming her and says that he loved her soul.
Travis was never able to fight Letz Shake for the 5th rank as someone kills him before Travis could even land the first strike. The man who killed Letz Shake introduces himself as Henry but before he could go into detail, Travis interrupts him. The two run at each other to battle but are interrupted once again, this time by Sylvia. Travis, although displeased, goes up in rank despite not having to fight anyone.
Sylvia invites Travis to a show which happens to be the 4th ranking battle. This is the first time in which Sylvia calls Travis to wish him luck before the battle instead of her usual percentages on how bad he was bound to fail. Harvey Moiseiwitsch Volodarskii, a magician and the 4th ranked assassin, calls Travis as a volunteer. Travis introduces himself and says that his name is pretty good while Harvey says that he has got his parents to thank for that. Travis then exclaims that his parents are dead. The two promptly begin their battle after the trick. Travis blinds Harvey and takes his title as fourth. After the battle, Travis FINALLY SCORES and Sylvia are seen sharing a kiss on stage.
The 3rd ranking battle against Speed Buster takes place in Speed City. Travis arrives there to find Thunder Ryu battling Speed Buster, however he gets distracted by Jeane (Travis' cat who followed Travis to Speed City) and is ultimately killed. Travis fights Speed Buster with a heavy heart, thirsting to avenge his master. He finishes her off by slicing her head and rises to rank three.
Before the 2nd ranking match, a carrier pigeon delivers a message to Travis from Sylvia which read: "Don't come looking for me." He leaves for the match, promising that there's only two more to go until their deal was over. Arriving at the basement stadium, Travis finds Bad Girl swinging away at cloned men in S&M gear. He tells her that she's no assassin, that she's just a maniac. The two battle but just when Travis looks triumphant, Bad Girl clenches her bat and starts swinging away at Travis' head even if she has his beam katana stuck through her gut. As soon as he shouts that she won, she slumps over and dies. Sylvia's two lackeys come to congratulate Travis before he collapses on the floor unconscious.
For the first time throughout the story, Travis decides to call the number on the calling card of the UAA. Instead he is connected to a woman who claims to be Sylvia's mother. She explains that Sylvia is a professional con artist and that he was not the first to be conned by her. The whole Association was entirely set-up by Sylvia. Despite that, the woman urges Travis to finish what he had started and go to that ranking battle.
Sylvia calls Travis just as he is making his way to the last ranking fight to say that they could not see each other again and she hadn't expected him to reach this far. She asks him whether he truly believed that she would allow him to do her upon reaching that rank because after all, he was just a dopey, otaku assassin that no woman could fall in love with. Despite mocking him she tells him that she loves him anyway.
He arrives to face Dark Star, who begins to claim that he is Travis' father. Travis however says tat he could not be his father and recalls that his parents were killed by the girl he had once loved. Dark Star then pulls out an immaterial sword to do battle with Travis but before he could even throw an attack, HE IS PUNCHED THROUGH THE CROTCH (no, I'm serious) which ultimately kills him. And look here, the one who killed Dark Star just happens to be Travis' former girlfriend, Jeane.
Jeane admits that she killed Travis' father. This triggers a memory of Travis slumped over a bar in a drunken stupor, ranting about how he had lost everything he cared about because of that bitch (Jeane) and Sylvia saying that she could help him get even. This was probably the promise that the two were talking about during the 10th ranking battle. He praises Sylvia for being a good con artist being to pull off something as big as the UAA just so he could get his revenge on Jeane.
Travis then asks Jeane who she is. Fourth wall breakage occurs here when Travis fast forwards through Jeane explanation which could only be heard correctly through the slowed down version on Youtube (yay, Youtube!). She says that the two of them are actually half-siblings. They come from the same father who decided to leave Jeane's mother for Travis' mother. Her mother was so devastated that she committed suicide. Her father learned of this and took advantage of Jeane's body, molesting her. She swore to kill him one day and thus became a killer and murdered him before Travis'.
The two finally fight, and Jeane punches Travis hard enough to draw blood. Shinobu suddenly comes out of nowhere and slices off Jeane's arm. This gives Travis the upper hand and thus kills her. Travis reaches the first rank… not that it mattered anymore.
So, life goes back to normal for Travis. Until he is suddenly attacked by an assassin as he is talking a dump! He is suddenly saved by Henry who calls him out of the parking lot to finish that duel of theirs. As the fight goes on, Henry tells Travis that they are actually twins. Travis then asks where Sylvia went off to, to which Henry pulls out another twist by saying that Sylvia is his wife and that they have been married since college. Henry apologizes for Sylvia's actions and explains that she suddenly disappears sometimes because his income can't accommodate her expensive tastes. Travis teases Henry by saying that Sylvia is a bad wife, but a good woman. Henry retaliates and the two start running down the road, swords clashed.
The two ponder about how to end it and Henry says it's Travis' job as the protagonist. Travis finally says "Let's find that exit they call paradise," and the two jump at each other one last time... before the credits roll.
tl;dr: He fought till he reached the top and didn't get his reward. :| Just like the cake. The cake is a lie. Sylvia's promise of vagina was a lie too.
[Personality]
Travis has a lot of bad traits. He has a very foul mouth as he shoots off profanities in most if not all of the cut scenes of the game. I suggest you keep the children away from him. He's a pervert, and he seems to be quite fine with people knowing it. He's not the most responsible person, which is shown through his recurring negligence in returning the porno tapes he borrows from Beef Head Videos.
However, he has a handful of good traits as well. He's driven to prove himself as a fighter, which probably one of the reasons he decided to continue through the ranks of the UAA. He's a quick learner and he proves to be quite witty, albeit immature, with the way he handles things.
He seems rather apathetic about killing people, but it seems rather valid for his line of work. Though he seems merciless, he does not have the heart to kill women. Despite all this, he listens to the other assassin's and, on some occasions, is even touched by some of their stories.
[Specialties/Abilities]
Prior to the start of the game, Travis had plans of becoming a professional wrestler. It seems that career did not take off but he still retains wrestling moves he learned during his training, and uses them against foes in battle. It is mentioned that he had trained in Calgary.
He also learned how to wield the beam katana through the training from his master Thunder Ryu as well as various self-teach videos. He also learned various techniques that helped improve both his grappling and beam katana skills from Randall Lovikov, the town drunk.
He is also a quick learner as he can imitate various wrestling moves by simply watching it being performed on tapes.
Travis has an ability to go Dark Side. Though it is not explained how or why he is able to do so, he becomes a killing machine - and quite possibly near-invincible - when in that state and could kill countless enemies with only a slash of his beam katana at an astounding rate. The list of his Dark Sides could be found
here.
He is also pretty good at dodging things, even if they come from behind him. This is shown in the 7th ranking battle when he turns his back on Destroyman and is still able to dodge the lasers.
[Affection]
He likes to touch himself.
He wants to get laid.
If a woman allows him to touch her, he will.
[Fighting]
Travis is a very good at fighting, even with his somewhat sloppy technique. How else could he have gotten to the #1 rank? He's an ace at pulling off wrestling moves to take down his opponent before finishing them off with his beam katana,
Tsubaki Mk-III.
He has no qualms about killing someone, especially if it's for the job.
[Other Facts]
Travis is probably the epitome of the saying "One man's trash is another man's treasure" as he has the habit of kicking open garbage bins to get new t-shirts or, on the rare occasion, money. So, if he starts going around Somarium digging around in trash, it's because he's trying to get a brand new wardrobe.
His favorite anime is Pure White Lover Bizarre Jelly. Basically, magical girls and fanservice. So very moe.
He likes cats. He has one named Jeane, which also happens to be the name of his "lost love".
Travis makes sure to hit the john before each ranking battle.
There is some fourth wall breakage in the game such as in the scene with Jeane where Travis says he'll fast-forward her explanation so it doesn't jack up the rating of the game. Another time this happens is when Henry reveals the twist towards the end and Travis complains by saying, "Why did you have to say this near the end of the game?"
He takes on odd jobs (which include cat-finding and scorpion collecting) whenever an assassination gig is not available for him during that time.
He drives a motorcycle dubbed Schpeltiger around Santa Destroy.
