2010 was kind of an insane year, with tons of awesome things and not-so awesome things, but I think overall, it's kind of hard to complain, right? Right.
1.
robyn - dancing on my ownYes, the "show me love"/"do you know what it takes" Robyn. She reinvented herself as a techno/electronic artist a few years ago, and I love her for it. She's an amazing performer, and this song is kind of the cat's pajamas. ♥
2.
arcade fire - sprawl ii (mountains beyond mountains)Arcade Fire put out a fantastic album this year (though Funeral will ALWAYS have my heart), and this was far and away my FAVOURITE song on that great album: it reminds me a little bit of "heart of glass" by Blondie, but it mostly makes me think about nostalgia and growing up, and that is not a bad way to be.
3.
the antlers - sylviaThis one is cheating a little bit, because the album came out last year, but they released Sylvia as a single THIS year, so I think it's okay. They're my favourite musical discovery of the year: Hospice is so devastating, and this song is so fantastic, so you should check it out.
4.
kate nash - don't you want to share the guilt?I can't find the album version of this song on youtube (and I like it better than the live one), but oh well. I listened to a lot of Kate Nash this year (well, last year, too. And the year before that) and not just because she mostly writes about break-ups and pining and temper tantrums. Basically, I listened to this song a gazillion times this year, and I'm still not sick of it. That's probably a good sign.
5.
girl talk - this is the remixFact: I love mash-ups. I also love Girl Talk, and his newest album because it's clever and kind of cheeky. This is my go-to song on his new album.
6.
kanye west (f/ nicki minaj, rick ross, jay-z) - monsterI kind of hate Pitchfork, but Kanye's new album was the first album they gave a 10/10 to since Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (which is one of my favourite albums of all time) and I like Kanye, too, so why not? So I super-dig this album, and I kind of really like this song. Yup.
7.
hanson - make it out aliveI love Hanson. I am not ashamed of this. I went to see a Hanson concert this year, and they played this song off their new album, and it's really hard not to adore this song when you're screaming along to the lyrics, squished between friends, and suddenly the entirely shitty week that you just had, and it was totally shitty too, seems so so so far away because you know that you are loved.
8.
stars - winter bonesI wasn't crazy about the last album, so I'm so glad that "Five Ghosts" was more up my alley. This certainly isn't the most "wow" song on the album, but it's pretty and the vocals are beautiful, and I think it's the perfect way to end the album. I've listened to this track more than any others on the album, and I don't foresee that changing any time soon.
9.
atomic tom - take me outHAHAHAHA OKAY HOLD ON: I am aware that the band name is horrible, and that the lead singer's voice is a cross between the guy from The Killers and the guy from Franz Ferdinand. But, do you remember
THIS VIDEO? Yeah, I watched it like a billion times because I thought it was adorable. Ergo, I have listened to the song many, many, many times. Hee.
10.
far east movement - like a g6WHAT CAN I SAY. I think this song is awesome. That is all.
BONUS:
wand erection - forever youngTHEY ARE LIKE A BASKET OF PUPPIES.
OH. ALSO. I am notoriously terrible at blogging, but for what it's worth, I am going to try keeping up with things while trampling around the other side of the world over
here.
FINALLY, I know that I shall be celebrating the new year probably by making terrible decisions. I hope everyone else's new years are equally productive, and that the next year will be even better than the last. <3
