Please, M. Night, Just Stop

The Last Airbender is getting 6% on Rotten Tomatoes.  Dude can't even crack double digits, it's time to stop making movies.

And lest you think it's just the critics who don't like fantasy movies, here it is from the fans:

I think I'll pass, and preserve my good memories of the cartoon.

"I want my money back! And I want my HAIR back!!"

Sad. So much potential there.

Seems to be doing okay, box-office-wise. Different sites I've been to have reported it's weekend earnings at anywhere from $40M to $70M, depending on how they calculate.

Maybe if it makes enough for a sequel, the next one will be better. :-)

I'm going to give it a pass, at least until I can see it for free and turn it off at will. I really wanted this to be a good movie!

Favorite imdb comment: "Movies like The Last Airbender almost make me wish that silent film still existed. From the delivery of the first line to the last word spoken, every single line that is delivered is done so with such a forced agony that the film is almost unwatchable."

And on top of this, people are getting upset at the racial casting (unknown white actors for the lead roles - even if the animated character was clearly not white - and non-Caucasian actors for the villains).

Clearly, M. Knight should only make movies with Bruce Willis in them.

I can't think of any at the moment, but I'm sure there must be movies that I've loved that all the critics hated, so I'm still tempted to see this on the big screen with my expectations set appropriately low. If nothing else, it does look pretty in the trailers.

Did you know there's a whole site - racebending.com - devoted to the protest over the casting and trying to extend a sense of activism to apply to more than just this one movie? I can't let myself get started beyond that, for fear of attracting a flamewar to poor Scothey's blog.

I have gone against the critics, too - but that's why I posted the clip - it's fan hatred, and it's pretty broad. I made my peace with the racial thing long ago, but from all accounts it's just a poorly directed and written film. Also, I can tolerate nitpicky little changes better then most, but I think the changed pronunciations of names ("Ohng," "Soak-a," "Ear-oh," and "the Awe-vatar") will drive me nuts.

Ahh, it seems they're pronouncing the names to match the spellings. I would have changed the spelling to match the pronunciations. (Drives me nuts to hear a character's name pronounced "Mei" and spelled "Mai," so I can sort of understand that.)

Now I think I need to go see this movie, just so I can be the devil's advocate. :-)
