EQUALS…
Author: Scotianova

Beta-fairy: Carol38
Disclaimer: I don't own them and writing about them is just for fun.
Genre: A story about different shades of love
Pairing: Reid and Luke - as always
Characters: Reid Oliver, Luke Snyder, Ravi Oliver, Ruby Oliver II, Kathryn Peretti, Liath Orbanns, Damien Grimaldi, Henry Coleman ,Dustin Donovan, Paul Ryan, Holly McLean…
Warning: none so far
Rating: sexual contents
Summary: On the surface they couldn’t be more different from every point of view, but if someone just looks closely at them…
AN1: This is an attempt to invert some facts and whereabouts but I hope the character drawing is plausible- somehow at least ;)
AN2: I used the name Ruby in a story once before but I like it so much, that I named even two characters after it this time.

“What?”
Two voices asked in unison.
God! Luke realized Ruby Oliver had used another name, maybe to hide her real name, maybe because she’d chosen an alias that she liked more than her real name. He would find out.
“Aurora… your mum was beautiful like the sunrise at the beach…so we called her Aurora.”
“Aurora is a Roman goddess.”
Ravi commented causing Luke to raise an eyebrow but Ravi addressed his father:
“Did you know about Mummy’s nickname, Daddy?”
“No, I didn’t but we both know that your mum loved stories and myths as much as you do, right?”
Instinctively Luke eyed the titles of several books piled up on a shelf near Ravi’s bed.
“Zeus and his mighty company”, “Merlin”, “The brothers Lionheart”, “The labors of Heracles”… and the one book on top was opened so he couldn’t read the title.
Usually Luke had a quick tongue but here in front of and so close to Ravi and his dad, who looked at him with those eyes of his in a way that should be forbidden, Luke was at a loss of words and an awkward silence filled the room. Ravi watched him with his huge eyes and Reid Oliver watched his son and Luke didn’t know at all where to look.
“Why don’t you come with me now, you must be hungry, since you haven’t breakfast yet Mr. Snyder.”
So Liath Orbanns took control and tried to lure Luke out of the room.
It was then when Luke heard a soft chuckle coming from Ravi: “Mr. Synder - that sounds funny, Gran-Li!” The elder man joined Ravi’s chuckle but looked at Luke expectantly. He got the hint and nodded towards Reid Oliver.
“If it’s okay I’ll drop by later?”
He didn’t know himself if he’d addressed the boy or his dad - Ravi answered anyway:
“That’s okay, Mr. Snyder.” And he showed a weak crooked smile.
“I would like you to call me Luke, Ravi.”
“I can do that Mr. Luke Snyder!” the boy answered earning a grin from his father.
This boy was something else. Terribly sick he managed to joke with him.
“It’s time for some body hygiene.” - was the last thing Luke heard while following Liath Orbanns and little Ruby to the dining room.
“Sorry, we’re all out of sorts lately, but I can offer coffee, tea, bagels, toast, yogurt, fruits, Mrs. McLean usually cares for our guests but she is busy today.” Liath explained but didn’t seem as if he was actually sorry for Luke not getting a splendid breakfast.
But “the guest” wasn’t hungry anyway.
Clearing his throat he finally dared to ask: “What happened to his liver? He’s just a kid!”
“His liver is shrinking because of a virus and that makes Ravi so sick!” Ruby Oliver told Luke like an expert before Liath could even start with explanations.
“I couldn’t have explained it any better!” Liath added but Luke wasn’t missing the tired undertone and he was sensitive enough to know that Ravi’s disease dominated the life of everyone related to the Oliver family.
“I am going to Mummy - I won’t wake her up, I promise!” Ruby suddenly remarked.
“You do that, Princess.”
Of course the girl was affected too and Liath knew it wasn’t time to remind her that her mother needed some rest; Ruby needed Katie now totally forgetting that she had an appointment with her pony in an hour.

“Ruby is Reid’s and Katie’s daughter so actually she and Ravi are cousins by birth, but there isn’t a pair of siblings that could be closer than them.” Liath added watching the girl disappear into that part of the house Luke assumed to be private rooms.
“All this can’t be easy for her.”
“It isn’t - you know, she loves her brother but he’s always in the center of her parent’s attention. Well, the family is big, there is always someone around and she twists everybody around her finger. But…”
“I know - I have three younger siblings.”
“But you aren’t close to them.”
“WOW…I just forgot for a second that you …”
“That I did what? Tracked the only person down who might help a little boy who is like a grandson to me? You’re a Grimaldi after all.”
“Meaning?”
“Meaning I’ve done my homework.”
“Just as people like you always do.”
Liath Orbanns didn’t bother to answer assuming Damian Grimaldi’s son was acquainted with loyalty when it came to family-members and Liath Orbanns was obviously part of this family.
“What happened to Aurora - sorry, I mean Ruby?”
“She died when Ravi was a toddler.”
“Why?”
“It was an accident.”
“Car accident?”
“No - Ruby was an excellent rider, but she never knew when to stop. Actually we don’t know exactly what happened, she only told us that Miramis, her gelding, had balked and thrown her when she felt sick … three days later she died. I wasn’t sure if Reid would ever come around again. He blamed himself for not having been persistent enough when it came to Ruby and her wild behavior, she just didn’t know boundaries, if it wasn’t because of Ravi I don’t know what would have happened to the boy.”
Luke wasn’t sure of whom Liath was talking, Ravi or Reid - but something in the older man’s voice told him it was Reid. Liath calling Reid ‘boy’ - Luke didn’t know why but he felt his heart constrict again. Well, this family seemed to have a similarly intriguing structure like his own and Liath actually reminded him of his father Damien. He was sure the older man could charm the hell out of anyone and would kill for the ones he loved. Watching Liath filling a cup of coffee and offering it to Luke the younger man suddenly wondered once more how Liath fit in the obvious living-arrangement in the Oliver-household. Was he here because Reid and Katie were occupied with caring for Ravi? Having learned that Liath was behind dragging him here, he couldn’t help wanting to know everything about the people he was confronted with here. But first and foremost he wanted to get to know the boy upstairs.
“Reid and Katie - do they have another child - except Ruby?”
“Sure, they have Ravi, it’s their child as much as Ruby is.”
Okay, Luke got the message and he even understood Liath’s motives for staking their claims.
“You don’t like me, right?”
“Listen Mr. Snyder, I don’t really know you and what I know isn’t much, just the important parts, I don’t know why you got involved with Ruby considering you’re an openly gay man. I don’t understand what Ruby was thinking, unless she wasn’t thinking at all. Unfortunately Ruby’s spontaneity always got the better part of her, but I am a lawyer, so I am a realist and don’t question things that happened in the past and can’t be changed. Meaning I see the fact that you’re Ravi’s biological

father and because you’ve come here without particular resistance I assume you’re accepting that fact too.”
“I mean nobody could ignore what’s clearly evident.”
“So are you willing to do it?”
“Since the moment your weird messengers showed me the result that wasn’t the question.”
“So what’s the question you have because there is one obviously?”
“What is going to happen afterwards?”
“…just what I thought.”
“Huh?”
“You’re a Grimaldi, you won’t give us what we want only to disappear afterwards without getting something in return. So get it out!”
“I want to get to know him; I want to have a role in his life.”
