I went to my Congressional representative's Web site and fired off an e-mail, all by my lonesome. Would be curious to know what you think of it

So then I go to Speaker Pelosi's Web site, where I'm amazed to see that she's already borrowed some of my talking points. ;) Fingers crossed.
"Congress will respond to the financial markets crisis by taking action this week in a bipartisan manner that will protect the taxpayers' interests. The Administration's $700 billion proposal does not include the necessary safeguards. Democrats believe a responsible solution should include independent oversight, protections for homeowners and constraints on excessive executive compensation.
"We will not simply hand over a $700 billion blank check to Wall Street and hope for a better outcome. Democrats will act responsibly to insulate Main Street from Wall Street.
"As we proceed to deal with this crisis, this is clear recognition that the party is over for the Bush Administration's anything goes, failed economic policies that have damaged our economy, undermined the middle class and further pointed out the need for a New Direction."
Way to go for taking the time to do this! It would be interesting if there's any response and/or if you're added to Price's mailing list re: economy issues.
"Rules forbidding golden parachutes at these companies. The financial executives that got us into this mess don't deserve eight-figure parting gifts

This whole economic meltdown has me returning to a book my brother bought me for Christmas (seriously, Christmas) a few years back: "The Creature from Jekyll Island: a second look at the Federal Reserve" -- basically, how all kinds of bad people make trouble with money and normal Joe and Jane American have to pay the price (anyone ever see "Conspiracy Theory"? Seriously, that's my brother, folks...). One of the chapters is called "The Name of the Game is 'Bailout.'" At the time, it made me want to take all my money out of the bank and shove it under my mattress (then again, Bank of America seems to be buying a lot of these failing companies, so maybe I'm ok). Now, it just makes me all the more hesitant to read the book he sent me for my birthday (seriously, a Target gift card would have been perfect, but NO), "iSpy: Surveillance and Power in the Interactive Era" because I'm pretty sure I'll end up thinking that my toaster oven is informing on me to the FBI.
