3 and a half hours to Southampton, 1 and a half on the way back.

The roads in this country are crazy.
What I really mean is - the M25 is crazy.
Where else would you find yourself in a non moving traffic jam at 6.55am? Then, when it finally gets moving and you find yourself doing 95mph, you wonder what was causing the hold up. I'm sure somebody stops for the hell of it just to wind everybody up.

Southampton itself is a big sprawl of a place, very city-like. From what I've seen of it, the people are unusually polite, there are a few inner city parks, a loudish night life and a "concrete" feel. I think I would prefer to live in Winchester - a little gem of an old market town complete with cathedral - which is only a bus ride away.
It would seem the choices are big, modern and buzzing or small, old and quiet.
But don't take my word for it. Go and visit before you make your mind up.

oh i will be going and having a look first, worry not - just wanted to see what i was up against. i think i'd be happier at winchester but the courses will be more likely to be at southampton... hmm. plenty of time to mull this one over though - thanks for the general impressions though!
