The Katrina and Asian tsunami things have given people these horrible images of submerged devastated cities, but Houston is neither in a bowl nor coastal. Allison in 2001 was the worst flooding ever reasonably expected here, and that was annoying if you had valuables in the basement or if the power to your iron lung went out, but it was otherwise quite survivable. And wind damage can be bad too, but it isn't a huge catastrophe. If a wet tree gets blown into my library I'll be upset that I was so unlucky, but I'll get over it. Should we get hit, the real pressing issue will likely be how I'll spend my free day off work when all the restaurants are closed.
I think I'm bad at worrying. This fact does not worry me.
I find myself wishing for a hurricane at the moment. Seriously, the first thing I thought was "Hurricane? Really?! Glee!" Or something like that. I would dearly love an enforced absence from work right about now. But I suppose wishing for untold millions of dollars of damage just so I can get a couple days off is a little selfish of me.
