I think its something that's trying to tap into a desire. Seriously, would you claim that, if you could be a supercool X right this very instant, no work, or you could be a supercool X in a year (5 years? 10?) with really hard work, you wouldn't become the supercool X now? Its wish fufillment ( ... )

I suppose I could think of few devices to have a character's powers develop over a longer period of time. The main thing that comes to mind is a montage which cuts out repetition, but even that is presented instantly in our time. Quick fixes have more impact on the audience. Black and white are more contrasting than black to white with shades of gray in the middle.
It also seems many superheros have all or nothing powers. How could you not instantly go from not flying to flying?

Quick fixes also place emphasis on a single fix. This sometimes gives a character a single weak point. And practically all epics have historically had a series of single fixes with a relic.

Hmm, an interesting thought. I've been a bit in the dark with movies recently, sticking mostly to cartoons. Maybe I haven't missed that much hah.
