“Daddy, Daddy, look, we're camping.”
Burt smiled as Kurt jumped gracefully off his mother's hospital bed and pulled his father towards their 'tent' (a bedsheet suspended between some IV poles). They spent the evening roasting marshmallows over an imaginary fire and telling stories to the background beeps and sighs of the monitors until Helen fell asleep to the sound of her son singing lullabies.
Years later Burt still kept a photo of the three of them taken that night by a bemused nurse in his wallet and looked at it daily.
He and Kurt never went camping again.
