Anyone know some novels of literary merit that have lesbian subtext in them?

I've gotta write an essay on something.

I know of a few that have lesbian *text*, not so much *sub*. Does that help at all?

Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit, Tipping The Velvet, and (possibly my all time favourite book if I have such a thing) Rubyfruit Jungle.

Heh, it has to be more Tolstoy then Terry. BUT WHAT'S THIS, another Discworld book I need to read?

I was thinking of that! I will admit that I've only seen She's The Man, though, because I fail at reading plays.

Well, I suppose one could read a bit into the initial Katerina/Grushenka interaction from the Brothers Karamazov, but it isn't really what's going on. Great book, though.

It's the 'literary merit' part that's tough.

'Slow River; by Nicola Griffith? Lesbian SF.
