[Third week marked Nepeta being grounded, so she figured it wouldn't hurt to at least watch over John and keep him company. While there were some downsides to having been born the way she was, she did not envy what John was going through. That was one thing she had been spared.

It was getting on a little late when she poked her head into the room John was being forced to stay in during his recovery.]

John? You wake?

[Yeah. Week three was a lot better so far if you ignored how useless he felt. Bluh. He could just barely sit up, but that was about it. Not to mention him missing that whole mission was something he was beating himself up for. Leaders didn't take sick days so it was stupid that he had to sit something out.

A visitor perked him up though, specially when he saw who it was, speak of the devil.]

Nepeta?

[Of course he probably looked a lot different than the last time she'd seen him.]

[...well, jeez. That stuff sure did work fast. Nepeta has a pretty excellent poker face, however, so she manages to keep the surprise from showing on her face.]

Yea. How you feeling?

Alright. [Like a bus hit him, really.]

What about you. I heard about what happened with that sleeze, Corneo.

Karkat, for one, had been visiting John pretty regularly. In fact, his visits worked somewhat like clockwork-- he always mapped out where everyone in the area was to ensure he wouldn't wander in to check on the idiot on anyone else's time, and he always slipped back out of the room before anyone could catch him there. He was pretty sneaky when he wanted to be, and in this case he definitely wanted to be ( ... )

It was likely then that Karkat had seen him during the worst of the poisoning. Where he had been fighting for his life and his sanity. Not one of his finest moment, what little he actually remembers of it. He did remember Karkat though, he was always there.

Whether he realized it or not, Karkat was probably one of the things that helped him survive.

But today he was looking better, despite feeling like he'd been hit by a train. He fluttered his eyes open when he felt the hand on his forehead. Bright blue even with the dim lighting of the room. He gave him a small lopsided grin (arund his stupid teeth).

"Couldn't kill me that easy."

It had scared him witless, because he was so sure he was losing him, just like he'd lost his father. He didn't want to have to kill another member of his family, turned into a monster-- he couldn't.

His throat closed up a little at the worn look on John's face, but he quirked a brief grin.

"Sure as hell tried."

John closed his eyes over again for a moment before trying push himself into a sitting up position. He was still pretty physically exhausted but he could manage.

He smiled a little wider at Karkat.

"Oh, it tried, but I still won. I promised I would."

It was sort of difficult to help in mothering John when one had no idea how to go about it. Dave had lost both his parents fairly early on, and Bro wasn't exactly the best at mothering when he'd been sick. At least he could observe Aradia and Kanaya flitting in and out, and occasionally Gamzee ambling in to drug John up, and see what they might have needed for their next rounds ( ... )

John wasn't sleeping but he was laying there mostly sore and tired. At least his body stopped throwing such a fit by now. He wasn't leaning over and horking his guts anymore and he wasn't growing any weird appendages. His horns weren't fully sized but they'd broken through the skin at that was usually the worse part.

He blinked a bit at the voice and turned his head just a bit with a smile. Maybe he'd been mostly delusional for that first week, but he did remember Dave. He remembered the conversations and the music and like Karkat, he was probably one of the reasons he even survived.

"Hey."
