Title: 昼寝 (nap)
Fandom: Harukanaru Toki no Naka de 4

Disclaimer: Nagi's probably relieved I don't own rights to him. He'd probably tell me I'm crazy for suggesting such a thing.
Notes: Set post-game, no spoilers for anyone's path though. Happy Birthday, Nagi. ♥

Hirune

Chihiro smiled to herself when she heard soft footsteps approaching her across the grass. She remained where she was, eyes closed, listening.

“...”

The barely-audible sigh reached her ears, but she waited for a verbal cue before speaking.

“You’re not sleeping, and we both know it,” Nagi said wearily.

Cracking open an eye, Chihiro looked up at him. “Hi, Nagi.”

He sighed again and ran fingers through his hair. “Don’t you have some work to do?”

Grinning, Chihiro shook her head. “I don’t, they made me take a break because they say I’ve been spending too much time staring at proposals.”

“More like your advisors don’t like the editing you’re doing to their work,” he grumbled. “Can’t you take a break somewhere else? I want to nap here.”

Chihiro giggled and shifted a bit, causing the hammock she was laying in to sway. “You can join me here?”

“No.” The answer came quickly, as if he had been expecting her offer.

“Why not?” she pouted up at him.

“Because you’re noisy, and I want to nap.”

“Nagiii...” Chihiro decided to change tactics. “I’m not moving, so if you want to lay in the hammock, you’ll have to settle for company.”

An annoyed expression flashed across his face, then just as quickly it disappeared. “Fine.” Nagi carefully lowered himself to sit in the middle of the hammock, his back to Chihiro. “I don’t really think this thing is made for more than one person.”

“I think it should be okay,” Chihiro commented, sitting up a little and laying a hand on his shoulder.

Nagi bristled, back stiffening beneath her touch. “What are you doing?”

“I was going to make sure you could lie down without tipping the hammock,” Chihiro answered.

“Just stay there and I’ll take care of the rest. Geez, it’s not as if I’m clumsy like Kazahaya.” Nagi slowly tilted to lay on his side while he picked his feet up off the ground, settling in beside her. The hammock swayed back and forth gently, and he silently debated whether or not he wanted to roll onto his back.

“Aren’t you going to lie on your back, Nagi?” Chihiro asked, breaking into his thoughts as if she could read them.

“Maybe,” he grunted noncommittally.

“’Maybe’?” she repeated. “But Nagi...” Chihiro shifted a little further away, grabbing his shoulder so that she could roll him over, but the movement jarred the hammock. She shrieked and threw her body forward, clinging onto Nagi so that she wouldn’t tumble to the ground.

“Stop that,” Nagi scolded sharply. “Leggo and just lay down like a normal person, would you?”

Directing a pouty mu at him, Chihiro slowly sat up so that she was no longer sprawled over him. “It wasn’t on purpose, you don’t have to be so grumpy about it,” she mumbled.

Nagi heaved yet another silent, inward sigh and finally rolled onto his back, looking up at her. “There, now are you happy?” At her immediate smile he shook his head. “You’re entirely too easy to please.”

“I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing.” Still pouting, she settled down in the hammock once more.

Eyes closed, Nagi informed her in monotone, “I’m going to sleep now.”

“You’re no fun, Nagi.”

One green eye opened, and in one smooth motion he rolled onto his side to face her while draping an arm over her waist to hold her there. “I’m tired, let me rest.”

A blush stained her cheeks pink, and Chihiro could manage little more than an, “Okay...”

“I appreciate it,” Nagi murmured softly, both eyes closed again, the rocking of the hammock already lulling him to sleep.

I should be studying. ; ; But I managed a birthday story AND wrote one of the ideas that's been rolling around in my brain for a couple months, so I think this is just as good as doing homework. Nagi would likely disagree and say I'm trying to justify my irresponsible procrastination. I sure hope grad school doesn't suck all of my creativity, if this is what the first week is like...
