Like a Knife

Shirin returned to the Oni hideout in a flurry of rose petals. The wind died down after a few moments, but her thoughts continued to whirl in maddening circles. Did that fool of a civil servant think she needed his pity? Why in the world would she need the compassion of her enemy when she could easily place any man under her spell?

Except for Akram-sama... the traitorous voice in her head reminded her. The one I would do anything for, if only he would look at me the same way I look at him.

A flash of gentle, golden eyes invaded her thoughts. Shirin pushed it away angrily. He had not fallen for her charms either. Nothing had gone according to plan.

How could she face her Akram-sama after failing in the task he had set for her?

"...does he really care for you, I wonder? If he would order a woman like you to do something so dangerous then I cannot think he does..."

Shirin shook her head rapidly to dislodge the words. What did that naive noble know? It didn't matter if Akram-sama did not have romantic feelings for her right now. He would someday, and the strength of her love for him could withstand the wait.

She wrapped her arms around herself and tried to imagine it was her beloved Akram-sama's embrace. Her right forearm throbbed painfully when she put pressure on it. Shirin raised the offending appendage and glared at the slash of red that marred her skin and huffed indignantly. How dare he even say such self-righteous words right after he caused this wound?!

Something white flitted to the ground when she lowered her arm. A handkerchief lay there, though not a familiar one. Shirin crouched to pick it up and caught sight of the bloodstain across one side. The Vice-Minister's handkerchief, she realized with an angry blush, had gotten caught in her sleeve when she pulled away from him.

Shirin stood there for several minutes and contemplated what to do with the scrap of fabric. In the end she chose to take it with her and tucked it back into her sleeve. It would not do to leave something so unsightly on the ground for Akram-sama to find, after all. No other reason would prompt her to keep an item that had belonged to another man.

No matter how much misguided kindness he may show others.

After she braced herself and took a few deep breaths, Shirin held her head high and went through the passage to where she knew her Akram-sama waited for her return. She wished he would bestow a few words of concern on her for the indignities that had befallen her on her mission, but at the same time she knew he would not. But a time would come when he would love her and gently take her into his arms if anything unfortunate happened. Shirin just needed to wait for that day to arrive.

Someday...

I wasn't sure if you were thinking of a slightly more romantic interaction between the two, Piney, and if you did I'm sorry this didn't quite make it. m(__)m I could try again sometime if you really want to see them closer.
