Title: Tadoritsuku [to reach a destination]
Fandom: Kyou Kara Maou
Pairing: ConradxYuuri
Rating: PG-13 for insinuated R activity
Disclaimer: Matsumoto Temari, Geneon, and Namco own the novels, anime series, manga, and video games.
Warnings: Scattered spoilers for the anime, possible vague references to the PS2 game Hajimari no Tabi.
Notes: This pairing was claimed on
1sentence using their beta theme set. The 50 sentences are put in a vaguely chronological order. Romanization for most of the names (everone but Cherie's was in there I think) was taken from the official guide book for Hajimari no Tabi. Except Yuuri, because there is an elongation in there that gets pronounced, even if people don't bother to write it that way.
41. Nowhere - It seemed to Conrad as if his horse couldn't possibly move slower during that first ride to pick up the newly-arrived Maou, but the truth was simply that his heart raced much faster than the hooves that tore across the ground.
38. Sojourn - Yuuri ached all over after the first hour of riding on Conrad's horse, but something felt familiar about the gentle warmth that surrounded him as they rode in a comfortable silence.
02. Waltz - Their first dance was clumsy, but Yuuri let him believe it was his own inexperience rather than Conrad's instructions whispered in his ear that caused him to step on the older man's foot entirely too many times.
25. Quitting - While he hated the idea of going back on his word to retrieve the Demon Sword, Yuuri admitted to himself as he returned to the cave on his own that what bothered him most was the idea of letting Conrad down after the other had defended him against Josak's barbed sarcasm.
47. Valiant - His pride in the young king rose another notch when Yuuri moved close enough to the spring's entrance for Conrad to see the outline of the sword clenched tightly in Yuuri's hand.
07. Wasteland - As Conrad watched the mud monster collapse back to the barren rock quarry while the unconscious Maou sank into his arms, he thought for the first time that his inability to use majutsu had its advantages.
04. Wonder - Conrad felt amazement every time he witnessed Yuuri slip into Maou form and use majutsu; Yuuri fought envy and longing whenver he saw Conrad in a swordfight.
22. Quirks - Despite the utter lameness of Conrad's horrible Alaska pun, Yuuri decided later if that made up the whole of Conrad's flaws then he really did fit into the 'too good to be true' category.
37. Soliloquy - Yuuri's eyes flashed with anger before the Maou took over, and as the king improvised a speech on the wrongs of evil and importance of justice he remained obvlivious to Conrad's subtle movement into a position better suited to catch Yuuri when he lost consciousness once judgement had been passed.
49. Victory - The first time Yuuri managed to push Conrad back a step while they practiced swordplay he felt a rush of satisfaction - of course, Conrad knocked his sword from his hand half a second later, but he counted his progress in the small steps.
42. Neutral - When Yuuri proclaimed himself ready for a bath at the end of a makeshift baseball game, it took all of Conrad's willpower to keep his face carefully blank when he asked if His Majesty wanted help washing his back.
14. Burning - Yuuri tried to play off the heat that rose to his face at the question as a result of the sun and exercise, but his hastily stammered refusal to Conrad's offer ruined the denial.
45. Natural - Watching Yuuri interact with others became one of Conrad's favorite pasttimes - when he saw the young king awkwardly fumble through one of his duties only to earn the respect of others it reminded him how futile it was to resist Yuuri's gravitational pull.
40. Solitary - The moment Conrad stepped into the arena and raised his sword he knew it wasn't possible to return to his home country as anything less than a traitor - but if he had prepared himself for that reality already then why did the shock on Yuuri's face when he finally realized which side Conrad stood on hurt so badly?
17. Belief - When everyone else all accepted Conrad's betrayal as fact, Yuuri became that much more insistent that it just couldn't be true.
50. Defeat - Much as Conrad loathed to show weakness, they both knew there was nothing Yuuri could ask for that he wouldn't give when the young king had that pleading expression in his eyes.
26. Jump - Some relationships required leaps of faith, but theirs couldn't be that simple, Yuuri thought with a sigh - no, theirs involved him getting hurled off a cliff while Conrad waited below to break his fall.
34. Serenade - Upon learning that the new king had trouble sleeping some nights Conrad smilingly offered to sing a lullaby, and even though Yuuri refused he sang softly until lids drooped over pure black eyes... and when Yuuri woke the next morning he announced that even though he couldn't recall the circumstances that led to it he had slept like a rock.
33. Stupidity - If he had given the idea even a little thought beforehand Yuuri would have realized that, even though he confided in Conrad about every other topic under the sun, there was no way the other wasn't going to figure out the identity of Yuuri's secret crush - especially when he couldn't look Conrad in the eye while he asked for advice.
30. Just - Though Yuuri could admit his feelings for Conrad to himself, and Conrad had figured them out as well, he refused to confess directly while still technically engaged to another - it didn't seem fair to anyone involved if the whole situation looked like one of those shows that aired on daytime television.
09. War - They fought over Yuuri's decision to break off his engagement to Wolfram, but even though in the end Conrad couldn't stop him he was able to tend to Yuuri's subsequent black eye.
32. Sorrow - Yuuri did his best not to cry in front of Conrad, but the scathing words from Wolfram after their engagement ended felt too much like he'd lost a friend, and he soaked the front of Conrad's uniform with salt.
28. Jousting - That night before supper, when Wolfram locked eyes with Conrad and knocked his own knife off the table, Conrad gave a slight sigh but bent to pick up the utensil anyway - if a duel with his younger brother was the only way to free Yuuri and make him happy then Conrad resolved to make sure they all got through the fight unscathed.
05. Worry - Once the meal ended, Yuuri went to Conrad's room to protest their upcoming fight, but Conrad merely shook his head, already resigned - it was one of Yuuri's most helpless moments as king.
16. Breaking - Yuuri's worry about the duel the next day rose with every step he took from the baths back to his chambers - apparently Wolfram had taken his anger out on the sconces lining the castle walls - but his heart sank to his toes when he stopped at Conrad's open door and caught sight of the misery on his face before the older man hid it behind a small, phony smile.
12. Blessing - Only after Wolfram managed to singe Conrad in several places did he restrict his fighting to swordplay, and after the inevitable loss he threw his nose in the air and stomped off - but not before he shot Yuuri, standing at the sidelines almost shaking with anxiety, a look accompanied by a small nod.
06. Whimsy - After three days straight spent wondering how to tell Greta about the changes in his life, Yuuri went to her room only to be greeted with, "Is Conrad going to be my daddy now too?"
21. Quiet - Eyes clenched shut, Yuuri desperately hoped that his request had been in a voice too small for Conrad to actually hear - but when he felt Conrad's breath on his face just before the other kissed him Yuuri felt inexplicably happy it hadn't.
18. Balloon - One day Conrad found Yuuri in Anissina's laboratory surrounded by several inflated versions of himself - preparations for the Maou Day Parade, she said as he stood flabbergasted by the replicas- and learned the hard way just how life-like latex could look.
08. Whiskey and rum - A coughing fit followed Yuuri's first attempt at downing a glass of hard liquor while he waited in Conrad's room for the older man to finish his rounds, but the sloppy, drunken kiss Yuuri had forced on a surprised Conrad when he walked through the door burned hotter than the alcohol.
24. Quarrel - Yuuri protested every time Conrad swore to give up his arm, chest, or life for the Maou - but the day Conrad changed the deal to his heart and soul Yuuri stopped for a moment, smiled, and agreed in kind.
19. Balcony - Upon entering the king's chambers one evening, Conrad found Yuuri on the terrace gazing at the stars and, it seemed to Conrad, waiting for the warmth of the taller man's arms wrapped around his slender frame.
03. Wishes - Conrad whispered "make a wish" but Yuuri just shook his head and pulled the arms surrounding him tighter - he didn't need to ask for something he already had.
27. Jester - Yuuri probably hadn't meant anything by the lighthearted joke about Conrad's experience with women, but their kiss immediately afterwards reminded Yuuri exactly where Conrad's heart lay.
13. Bias - Gwendal remprimanded Conrad every now and then about his lenient attitude toward Yuuri, to which Conrad merely smiled and responded that he wasn't the only one who had a hard time being objective where Yuuri was concerned.
01. Walking - Trying to get from point A to point B when someone a good head and shoulders taller was doing his best to kiss Yuuri senseless, the naive king quickly learned, was next to impossible when the other party was unwilling to let him get more than a centimeter or two away.
29. Jewel - Every now and then Yuuri would hold his pendant up the the light, the various shades of blue glittering before him as he remembered who had orignally owned it and why he received it from Conrad in the first place.
23. Question - From the look on Yuuri's face when Conrad wrapped his arms around him and leaned down to murmur words of love in his ear, Conrad guessed Yuuri wasn't aware that every time he gazed into the blue depths of the gem around his neck that his expression asked for reassurance.
15. Breathing - Even if asked, Conrad wouldn't admit that he thought watching Yuuri sleep, the young king's hand curled loosely under his cheek with his eyelashes casting faint shadows over his cheekbones that fluttered with each breath, was the greatest honor life had bestowed upon him - that side of the Maou was one he was quite unwilling to share.
11. Birthday - The day Yuuri turned sixteen he pledged his life and future to Shin Makoku - that same night he and Conrad gave themselves to each other.
44. Near - After a small handful of clumsy, would-be assassins failed an attempt on the castle Conrad insisted that he move into the king's chambers to protect him at night - and though the whistle and catcall Josak sent after the captain when he retired for the evening irritated him, Conrad found himself pleasantly surprised by the clueless agreement on Yuuri's face when he opened the door.
36. Sordid - Yuuri sighed as Morgif dragged him across the reception hall after yet another pretty skirt - though he supposed, with a quick glance toward Conrad that left his cheeks flushed, that it would be strange and slightly disturbing if the Demon Sword suddenly decided to chase after men.
39. Share - Riding the same horse as Conrad shouldn't have made Yuuri blush since it had happened so many times already, but the strong chest pressed against his back and the warm breath that Yuuri could swear Conrad blew in his ear on purpose reminded the embarrassed king of their private time the night before.
43. Nuance - Murata remarked once as he watched a game of catch between Yuuri and Conrad that using the same position had to get boring after a while, to which Yuuri gave the Great Sage a puzzled look and replied that since he had always been a catcher it was more comfortable to keep it that way.
31. Smirk - Conrad could have sworn that the Great Sage's glasses shone with an evil sort of glee and stalled the other's reply with a pitch that intentionally went wide - he felt relieved that Yuuri had to run out of earshot before Murata wondered aloud how Shibuya managed to remain so innocent.
20. Bane - Yuuri had always hated Conrad calling him by his title, but the one night Conrad slipped and accidentally murmured it in a low voice that cracked halfway through the syllables ensured that Yuuri turned scarlet every time he heard Conrad say it thereafter.
35. Sarcasm - Conrad didn't know how Adalbert had gotten wind of he and Yuuri's relationship, but the snide remarks made him happy rather than annoyed - for the other to show his jealousy outright meant that Yuuri had affected the other man positively.
10. Weddings - Though they decided against a formal ceremony - the rings enscribed with their names felt like enough of a promise for both of them - Cherie insisted on throwing a reception for them and inviting the nobles from all of Shin Makoku's allies, and before the night ended she had found herself yet another potential groom.
48. Virtuous - Anyone who claimed Conrad set an excellent example for the soldiers who served under him obviously hadn't heard the rumors about what those on guard duty near the Maou's chambers could hear from their stations in the hallway during the small hours of the morning - even so, the soldiers' respect for their commander only grew further.
46. Horizon - Over time, Yuuri had learned to listen when Gwendal and Günter said his presence in the castle was necessary when Conrad left to oversee conditions in villages across the country, but he looked in the distance every evening for signs of the captain's return.
It's a lot harder than it looks to write these. My one regret is that I couldn't find a good way to work in the bit in the video game with
Conrad tying Yuuri's shoe. From behind. What a great CG.
