Severus sat at his desk in his private quarters pointedly ignoring the click of the door as someone entered. He knew exactly who that someone was and he had no desire what-so-ever to talk with them. He knew he was being childish and jealous and impossibly stupid over a boy but he couldn’t help himself. It was ridiculous trying to tell himself that Harry was just any boy. After all if he were Severus would never have risked his career and what little reputation he still had to engage in a relationship with him while he was still at school. Even though it was only a matter of weeks until he graduated that didn’t change the fact that they had been shagging since Christmas and there was no way anyone would understand, most of all Albus.

Dumbledore wouldn’t care that Harry was infinitely more mature than the boys he shared a dormitory with, he wouldn’t care that they had worked side by side this last year to get rid of that snake-faced bastard. It was important for them to be discreet while Harry finished his studies so it was probably not a good thing to have stormed from the great hall in the middle of dinner in a rage. Dumbledore saw everything.

“Severus what was all that about?” The tentative whisper came from just inside the door, he had almost forgotten Harry was there.

“Leave me alone,” Severus ran one long pale finger around the rim of his scotch glass and stared at the stone wall in front of him willing Harry away.

“I don’t understand what’s wrong, you were just eating dinner and you stormed out of the hall? Was it something I’ve done?”

Severus rose from his chair before he decided to respond. He looked far more imposing standing up. Even if Harry claimed not to be scared of him at all anymore it couldn’t hurt. He turned to the younger man and perched at the edge of his desk and folded his arms across his chest. He still failed to look Harry in the eye.

“Severus please…”

“Who exactly are you taking to the Leaving Ball then Mr Potter?” Severus’ voice was like ice and when their eyes finally met, Harry swallowed hard. He didn’t want to attend the rotten ball; even just as a chaperone but just the thought of one of those hormonal crazed teenagers touching Harry drove him insane with jealousy. He wasn’t ashamed to admit his jealousy, the stupid little whelp was his and he wasn’t going to watch him waltzing around the Great Hall with some hormonal girl.

He looked Harry over as he waited for a response; he was tugging at the bottom of his loose white school shirt and looking anywhere but at Severus’ face, definitely guilty.

“Well Potter?” He growled.

“Stop calling me that, I hate it when you say my name like that!” Harry whined. “I’m going with Ginny,” Severus’ grip on the edge of the desk grew tighter. Not the Weasley girl.

“Oh,” Severus examined his shoes, anyone but the fucking Weasley girl.

“I didn’t know what to do!” Harry wailed as he moved further into the room and reached out imploringly to the older man. He desperately wanted Severus to understand and just attempt to be reasonable but Severus just glared at him.

“I can’t ask you! What was I supposed to do go alone?” As Severus’ silence lengthened Harry began to sound really distressed but it only made Severus feel more angry and betrayed.

“Yes!” He suddenly roared and watched as Harry flinched, failing to feel guilty.

“So because I’m with you I can’t share any of the normal experiences with my friends?” Harry’s hands curled into fists and if it were any other occasion he would have laughed at the teenage petulance radiating off of the boy.

“Not with her,” Severus growled, pathetic as it was he could not forget the fact that Ginny and Harry had once been an item, and the way the girl still looked at Harry was not lost on him.

“Fine Severus I’ll just sit in the dorm for my last night at Hogwarts, will that make you happy?” They glared at one another for a moment.

“Do what you like Mr Potter I don’t care. After all you had your last potions class this morning, you’ll be gone in two days and thankfully you wont be my responsibility anymore.” He knew it was a mistake as soon as he said it; Harry looked as if he had been slapped. There was just something about that girl and Harry together that made his blood boil and his mouth say the most hurtful things imaginable. He continued to tell Harry he was a bad tempered bastard but the stupid boy didn’t seem to listen, maybe now he would get the point. After all where was this going to go?

“Fine,” Harry turned around and walked out of his chamber door. Severus stared at the door for a long time after, wondering as he had many times before why he was so self-destructive.

Severus saw nothing of Harry the next day and he now found himself standing in the Great Hall watching the seventh year couples entering the room as the band played. He watched as Granger and Weasley wandered through the great double doors, almost oblivious to the people around them as they whispered furiously to one another. Despite the frown lines across her forehead Severus could not help but notice that Granger was looking particularly lovely, he found it hard to associate her with the gangly know-it-all eleven year old who had annoyed him so greatly. Behind them was the Longbottom boy and his eyes widened, the Weasley girl was clutching tightly to the taller boys arm. Where was Harry?

He stood with the teachers as long as possible before he noticed Granger standing alone at the punch bowl; he swept over to her as discreetly as possible.

“Miss Granger,” he coughed and watched as the young women looked up at him startled.

“Um… yes, can I help you Professor?” Under any other circumstances he would be amused by how afraid the young woman still was of him but he was a little too preoccupied. Sure he had been cleared of all charges since Harry had killed Voldemort during the previous Christmas, but he was always going to be formidable.

“Where’s Potter?” He growled despite his anxiety he was still angry with the little brat.

“Harry sir?” Granger looked around suspiciously and he felt his anxiety levels rise considerably, he was definitely familiar with that expression of mixed guilt and mock innocence. He usually saw it right after something went missing from his potions stores.

“Yes Granger, what other Potter is there?” She met his eye with a level stare and he considered that maybe she wasn’t so afraid of him after all.

“He’s packing sir.”

“Packing? The seventh years don’t leave for another two days.” Severus felt his palms begin to sweat.

“Yes sir, he wouldn’t come tonight. He’s been behaving quite strangely. He came bursting into the common room last night almost in tears and spent the entire evening warded inside the curtains of his bed. I’ve not been able to get any sense out of him all evening, he just keeps packing,” the young girl ranted, she was obviously upset and worried.

“Thank you Granger,” Severus whispered hoarsely as he swept away from her and left the Great Hall in search of his younger lover.

He did not get far before he found Potter dragging his heavy Hogwarts trunk down a flight of stairs not far from Gryffindor Tower. Severus stood at the bottom of the staircase staring at the skinny, gangly bag of limbs he happened to be stuck with and waited for the whelp to notice him. A few steps from the bottom Harry stumbled over his own feet and lost his hold over the truck which went steaming down the last remaining stairs. Severus had to jump to get out of its way, he watched as the younger man sunk to his knees.

“Potter,” Harry’s shoulders tensed and he clambered to his feet before turning to Severus. The older man was surprised at how hurt Harry looked. There were dark circles around his eyes, which should not belong to a person so young and his skin was red and blotchy from his obvious crying. They stood for a long moment saying nothing.

“What do you think you’re doing?” Severus’ haughty tone did nothing to change Harry’s expression or his hunched shoulders.

“I’m leaving, sir,” Harry’s voice cracked.

“What exactly do you think gives you the right to leave before the rest of the students, and without telling anyone where you’re going, what are you a coward?” Severus sneered.

“Fuck you Severus!”

“No, fuck you Potter!” Severus stepped forward until they were almost nose to nose. Harry whimpered, whether from their close proximity or from the rage radiating from the older man, he could not tell. He was so close he could feel Harry’s breath on his face, it was ragged. The younger man dropped his gaze to the floor.

“Why would I stay Severus? There is nothing left for me here, you said so yourself yesterday. I am not your responsibility any longer,” Harry sounded choked and it pained Severus to hear it. The stubborn jealous monster inside him wanted to shake the boy and scream at him for hurting him, for making him love him but instead he found his arms circling the boys’ shoulders.

Harry struggled for a moment but soon found himself sobbing in Severus’ shoulder.

“I’m sorry Severus,” Harry sobbed into his neck. “I didn’t want to take Ginny, she’s just a friend, and I want you, only you!” The boy was sobbing and hiccupping and babbling incoherently. Snape cupped his head and pulled back. They stared at one another and Severus smiled which would have been a scary sight for anyone else who might have been around.

“We’re both stupid Harry; why else would we find ourselves together?” Severus pressed a kiss to Harry’s wet lips and wrapped his arms around the boy once more. They were only broken from their reveries when a cough was heard behind Severus.

They both turned to see who had stumbled upon them and came face to face with Albus. Instead of anger in his eyes they both saw amusement.

“I came to inform you both that the ball is in full swing, but perhaps it would be better that you retire to Severus’ chambers, I’ll have a house elf take your things down.”

“Albus, I can explain!” Severus stepped away from Harry and turned towards the headmaster, who simply held a hand up silencing the Slytherin.

“No need Severus, I wish you had come to me earlier, and I’m surprised you think you can hide anything from me, but I am not displeased. The two of you have had such unhappy lives, Harry leaves school in a few days and after that you’re free to do as you wish.” Albus’ eyes danced with laughter as the two younger men simply stared at him goggle eyed, of all the ways they thought this scene would play out, this was not one of them.

“Good night Severus, I do hope you’re feeling better Harry.” Albus winked and walked away before either of them could respond.

Severus turned back to Harry and examined the younger man’s face, he still looked sad and unsure so Severus leaned forward and pressed their lips together.

“Lets go downstairs.” Severus gathered Harry to him and led him towards the dungeons, making hopeless promises with himself to never hurt the boy again.
