Title: Hats and Shirts
Fandom: ST TOS
Pairing: Kirk/Spock
Rating: G!
Word Count: 500
Summary: obstinatrix wrote me something about hats (appropriately titled "Something about Hats") and then prompted me right back with writing something about hats based on my twitter icon -- it was all much quicker and much more charming than I'm describing! Anyway! Fucking hats, man! They're awesome! Ignore the part where this is a Jeeves and Wooster conversation, what. Oh, and -- set in those adorable days right before Wrath of Khan.

"Now this," Kirk said with something like a sigh and astonishment in his voice. "This takes me back. Do you remember this?"

"Stardate 2268.12, our visit to the planet Sigma Iotia II -- our encounter with yet another native species influenced by a Starfleet officer's breaking of the Prime Directive," Spock replied.

"…Yes, all that, but I remember these hats," Kirk said.

An exhibit, an honest to everything exhibit, had been opened with relics -- no, not relics -- tokens from the Enterprise's travels. The original crew had been invited for a brief visit before its open to the general public, but Kirk and Spock were quite alone in the room for the moment.

"Shame we're the only ones planetside at the moment to enjoy this," Kirk said. He was standing in front of a glass case with two hats suspended inside, one whiter than he had ever seen it with a thick blue band, and one brown with a burgundy band.

Spock had been glancing at a manuscript in a case and walked over to Kirk, his fingers brushing Kirk's hand ever so slightly as he stood by his side.

"The native garb of that planet was not… unbecoming," Spock said. "Though the cervical accessory…"

"It's called a tie."

"…I imagine it would be," Spock mused. "That is its central operational mode, the tying around on a neck, but my initial thought was at the discomfort I felt while it was on my person."

"You said -- oh, it's right here, 2268." Kirk turned to Spock and said, "You waited seventeen years to tell me I tied it too tightly?"

"I did not think it relevant," Spock replied. "For the record, I still do not."

Kirk laughed and asked, "What else are you hiding from me, hm? Now's the time, Spock. If not at home or at Starfleet or any other place we spend our time, then right here in this exhibit." Kirk felt he was smirking hard enough to break a cheekbone, but it was worth it for the pointed eyebrow and quirked lip Spock gave him.

"I believe now is the time to say, outright, that your green shirt was a mistake."

Kirk laughed and drew the attention of a guard across the room, who was promptly waved off.

"Is that all, Captain?" Kirk asked.

"I believe so, Admiral," Spock replied. "Other wardrobe choices were necessary for ingratiating ourselves with the native population, but that shirt --"

"Was inexcusable, I know. Thankfully Starfleet rescinded its 'summer' uniform order quickly and quietly."

"I believe if anyone should receive credit for the prompt and efficient dismissal of that article of clothing, it should be me," Spock said.

"Yes, Spock," Kirk said. He turned back to the hats' display case to hide his grin and added, "Your prompt and efficient dismissal of that shirt every night, if I remember correctly, was well appreciated by the captaincy and I awarded you full verbal commendations at that time." Kirk glanced at Spock and asked, "Didn't I?"

Kirk could see Spock swallow and focus on the hats, too. "Yes, I believe so."
