Question for all my fellow bargain hunters out there: what is your preferred rewards-based credit card? I've been using the Capital One No Hassle Miles card for about a year now and have been pretty pleased. Basically, if you get the Ultra card and pay the $39 annual fee, you get 2 miles/dollar instead of 1.25. Effectively, that means you can ( Read more... )

The thing about American Express is that they're extremely conscientious of their customers. For instance, when Apple announced that they were dropping the price of the iPhone by $200, AmEx issued a $200 credit to people who bought their iPhones at the original price with an American Express card. I don't think CapitalOne would do that. :)

Ive also heard from a financial prof that worked for AmericanExpress that they are far less forgiving on grace periods and such with their cards.
Forget to make a payment on time? Ooops, your now paying maximum rate on your card and they send off the fact you were late to the credit bureau as soon as possible.
Not exactly what I want in a credit card company.

Well, to be quite honest, if you have trouble making your payments on time you probably are better off not using a credit card at all. I don't mean to come across as rude or snobby, but financially that's the best attitude to take.

Can't say I've ever had that experience. I've never even had to call them to make them reverse it. I've completely forgotten to pay them all together before. They've never complained. I just paid both bills next cycle.

Their customer service is simply amazing. A lot of merchants don't like them because they often side with the consumer in disputes.

I've had an Amex card since I got one in college and have been with them since. I don't get offended if someone doesn't take it, I just whip out my VISA. But, if I have a choice, I'll go with the place that takes Amex. There's a car wash place near my office I don't go to regularly because they don't take Amex. I drive a little farther to another place, because I want tax-deductible expenses on my Amex.

I think the reason is mostly due to Amex's customer service. They just rock. If I get double charged, have errors on my bill, or get into a dispute with a merchant, I don't even contact the merchant anymore. I just flag it online or call Amex customer service. They call the merchant, and handle everything. Unlike VISA/MC, which make you try to "work it out" first with the merchant (usually in writing ( ... )

I've got two Visas from Chase, one is the Amazon.com (3% back from Amazon purchases, 1% back on everything else, paid in $25 Amazon gift cards) and another generic 1% back.

I think CitiBank has a MasterCard that does 5% on gas and groceries and 1% on everything else. Although since you don't have a car, maybe that's not as appealing.
