MOD POST: FAQ

What is screwcanon?

screwcanon is a way for rareshippers and curious minded persons of many fandoms to come together to share stories and recommendations. It is not an archive (per se), a challenge community (though a challenge is not out of the question), or a personal flotation device (though some say it is buoyant).

What’s up with the master list?

The master list is just a way for members to share what they’d like to read, and to get ideas for what they’d like to write. Request that Beast Boy/Animal Man fic you’ve been dying to see! Write the Cable/Deadpool love story of somebody’s dreams! And then, when someone aquieses to your seedy desires, you’ll know it was all for you, baby.

You don’t have to feel limited by the master list. If you’ve written a pairing that’s sufficiently insane, especially if you’re the only person who’s ever written it, feel free to post it.

How do I post a request?

First, make sure your subject line is “screw canon!” (the exclamation mark is very important). Secondly, tell us the pairing you’d like, as well as the fandom. Feel free to post as many requests in as many fandoms as you want in one post. A lovely example can be found here.

How do I post a fic/rec?

For the subject line, use “FIC: Character A/Character B” (only replace Characters A and B with real characters, unless you’re writing alphabet slash). Then, use the following format:

Title:
Fandom:
Pairing:
Rating:
Summary:
For: (the username of the person who made the request.)

If the fic is 100 words or more, please lj-cut it or just link to it. If you’re recommending someone else’s fic, please link to the story, rather than reposting it, and make sure to include the author’s name.

How do I shot web?

Please consult your friendly neighborhood Spiderman.

Should I bother tagging my posts?

Nah, leave it to us.

So what’s rare, anyway?

This is mostly up to your discretion. We can say, however, that a pairing is not rare if:

-Several stories featuring it are readily accessible on one of the big fic sites, such as ff.net;
-There is an active archive or community for it; or
-It is canon, unless the fandom is very small.

However, if you are looking for a particular genre of a pairing that fits one of those requirements, say, Peter Parker/Mary Jane BDSM fic, which is practically nonexistent, that’s okay too.

What about Harry Potter?

The thing about Harry Potter fic is that there’s so much of it. If you can dream up a pairing, odds are, someone’s written it. From Sorting Hat/Trelawney to Harry/Hedwig, it’s been done. If you’re looking for a HP pairing, we suggest you check out the archives that are around, especially HP Rareslash.

That being said, if you seek and seek and still don’t find, you’re welcome to request.

What about RPS/RPF?

At the present time, RPS is out of bounds, as far as the community goes. This is because of the personal preferences of the mods, our ignorance of what is and is not rare, and the general scope we've established for the community.

However, fic concerning fictionalized versions of real people (for example, Chaucer in A Knight's Tale, John and Alicia Nash in A Beautiful Mind, or Isaac Newton in Quicksilver) is a-ok.

Are there any other rules?

Yes. There are always other rules, but they all fall under the general heading of “Don’t be an ass.” Don’t flame somebody because they want to read Jonathan Kent/Lois Lane. Don’t troll. Don’t feed trolls. Don’t spam. Don’t promo for your community without contacting a mod first, unless it’s a community for a rare pairing. If there’s a problem, yo, we’ll solve it check out my hook while the dj revolves it. Ahem. Just contact sabinelagrande or shadowenmagic.

Anything else?

Have fun. And never forget, screw canon!
