Well, I can probably help, but there are a few things I need to know first. Keep in mind I'm not familar with iPods, but with sound files.
Where did you get the songs you currently have on your ipod? i.e., were they on your computer before you transfered them? If so, how did they get to your computer? Did you use a program like iTunes to rip them from a CD?
IF they are on your computer, what kind of files are they? .wav's? If so, they take up a lot more space than an .mp3
If they are on your computer and are .mp3's, what bit rate are they? You can find this out by opening them up in iTunes and right clicking on the song, then selecting "Get Info". When Apple lists specs such as "Holds 1000 Songs", they mean 1000 average length (3-4 mins) at a 128 bit rate, which is a little below CD quality sound (and is pretty much the norm for many mp3's you can download). If the mp3's are something higher, like 192 bit rate, then they'll take up more memory.
Let me know the answers to these questions and I might be able to help.
