I say I'll get better at doing this, but then I don't. So you get what I remember.
Trip to San Jose / San Fran, California mid-October: Tons of fun was had.
Flew in on Wednesday with no problems to San Jose airport. Bummed around for a little but until it was time to head into San Fran to poke around the Japanese plaza and for an Aesop Rock show at the Fillmore on Geary St. Oh Geary! (old joke, never mind) The show itself was really fun. Most of the crowd was pretty good. Got stuck next to a few social retards that took away from the show a bit. But overall pretty fun. Then navigated us back onto the directions we had to get back to the house.
Don't remember much of Thursday, but I think this is the day we went to Target and saw the six dollar pies. This is called foreshadowing. Then we went over to see Jon and Adriane for a few minutes. Hung out, met the bulldo- err... cat. It ended with some really good Korean fried chicken and Soju at midnight with Ron and one of his roommates Eric. Good times. At least I think that was on Thursday. As I said, Soju was involved. I'm pretty sure this was the day that we went to a used CD and book shop. Picked up a bunch of stuff I had been looking for on the cheap. And for Ron: They were buy 3, get 1 free? Really?
There was a nice Friday trip to San Fran where we did the tourist thing. Rode up on the BART system (train), took the MUNI (bus/streetcar) to Fisherman's Wharf. Had to get off for ten minutes at a stop half way there while the driver apparently took his break. Then we resumed the journey to Pier 39. Several pictures taken of the wharf, sea lions, Alcatraz, random stuff. Ended up meeting Lily at the stinky bread shop for desert. We walked up to the pirate ship which had just bared closed for the evening. Wandered around for a bit, we hung out at her place for a little while. Walking up and down the San Fran sidewalk hills is really fun. And Ron and I head back on the last BART back out. Train entertainment consisted of my watching him play Ace Attorney on the Nintendo DS.
Saturday was pretty much be a lazy goof and go walking around a nice neighborhood until it was time to go over to Jon and Adriane's to visit and sit in on the tag in of a game story arc. And buy two of the $6 pies from Marie Calender's restaurant. One punkin and one kaluha cream cheese pie. Mmmmm good. Perfect evening: surrounded by friends, good gaming, Big Trouble in Little China, a good appetite worked up by a pleasant speed-walk up and down the street at night, good pie, and finally Jon and Adriane helped me figure out what part of my shoulder has been bugging me for a couple months.
Sunday was return day. Packed up, went out for breakfast with Ron and Adriane. Saw Jon gunning out of the parking lot just as we were coming up. Good to know some things don't change.
Whole trip had perfect weather. Nice and dry air, cool 70's during the day, actually smelled like fall is supposed to smell being as it's almost Halloween. The only day it rained at all was on the way up to San Fransisco, but it had stopped before we got to the wharf. Absolutely wonderful. Nice hills off in the background everywhere, kind of brown though. Would probably be fun to climb up. After visiting, moving out there doesn't seem quite so far-fetched. If only housing wasn't quite so ridiculously over-priced.
This past weekend I went to the Houston Renaissance Festival with two friends from Aikido. Pirate Weekend! Woo hoo!
Met up with Pam and Kyle Saturday morning, ran over to the costume shop since anything I would use for a costume is still in Illinois and picked up a decent little something. The costumes they had made were pretty darned good. Hour drive up to the Ren Fest. Much fun was had since it was my first time actually going to one. I have known lots of people that did the Ren Fest thing, but never got around to going to one myself. And apparently this is a huge one.
Saw a few comedy shows, watched a really impressive show with a guy playing the carillon (4 tons of bronze bells on an outdoor rig), watched a great Celtic group called Tartanic a couple times, watched part of the jousting show, rode a camel and an elephant (which was a lot like riding a large, wide, tired horse), threw some knives, poked around a bunch of shops and an armory museum. Finished it up by walking around a side garden away from the throngs of people just before dark and then watching the fireworks show over the jousting arena lake. Pretty good fireworks.
Afterwards went over to Kyle's place for dinner and Pirates of the Caribbean. It was Pirate weekend, after all. And to play with Kyle's dog. It's a dingo, and it's freakin' great. Day started at 9 o'clock and didn't get to bed until 3 o'clock that night. Excellent day at the Ren Fest.
Many pictures for both trips were taken. I'll post a couple when I figure out an easy way to upload them.
And now I'm going to work because it's almost 10:00 at night and Discovery is supposed to launch tomorrow. STS-120 will be a 14 day flight to get one of the new solar panels ready for full functionality and attaching a new module to the space station for ESA (European Space Agency) to be able to dock some of their new equipment. Night shift again for me.
