My review of "Let's Kill Hitler". Obviously there will be spoilers under the cut...
Overall reaction is confusion and sorta feeling let down. But mostly confusion and WTF.
Things I liked:
-Old companion scene. I was incredibly excited that finally they acknowledged that Rose, Martha, and Donna existed.
-Rory. Rory like always was pretty much awesome and I love him even more now.
Things I didn't like:
-Mel. I know they acknowledged that she wasn't at the wedding, etc., etc., but introducing a completely new character that was supposedly was so important was just weird and didn't feel right.
-River Song. Unlike most people, I don't really hate or love River. For all of her alleged Mary Sue-ness she doesn't bother me, I think she's quite funny sometimes, but I'm not squeeing over her whenever she shows up. I thought River Song's character was fakey and didn't come across as real. I know she has been brainwashed for most of her life, but come on if she had been really trained to be that ruthless, wouldn't she have not given a damn about the Doctor or her parents? Either the silence can't brainwash worth shit or Moffat just wanted to use another deux ex machina again.
-The pacing. I felt like the whole time Moffat was saying to the audience, "Look how clever I am! Look at this and look at that and see all this timey-wimey crap, haha look at how confusing I can make this plot! And look at all the shit I can cram into one episode!"
Granted Doctor Who is a sci-fi, action/adventure show, but even in action movies there are times where a quiet scene is needed, if nothing else to let the audience chew over what big thing just happened. But I guess Moffat would disagree as he packed in Hitler, the Doctor dying, Robots, River Song, Backstory of Amy and Rory, and information about over-reaching arch of the series all into one episode. Not only was it confusing rather than clever, but it was just a jumbled mess of a plot. With the title, the audience expects one thing and then you keep delivering weird outcome over weird outcome. Not cool or clever Moffat.
So in conclusion, even though I tired of RTD's emo doctor crap, I'm starting to miss him. Atleast he knew when it was time to pull out the big guns and when to keep them in check. I'm starting to feel like the Doctor Who I started watching is turning into some bizzare, weird, sci-fi soap-opera.
