So bright it brings tears to her eyes, winter light, because she’s forgotten her sunglasses too, of course. Everything is wrong today. Even the car protests, its engine whining and shuddering: It’s too cold. Take me home.
She grips the steering wheel with numb fingers. Bobby mumbles to himself, his pen making small scratching sounds as he figures it all out.
“Pull over a minute,” he says absently as they near a convenience store.
And because he’s Bobby, and continually surprises her, he emerges with gifts: Hot tea, a hat. With ear flaps.
“Because…you know…it’s winter, now.” He smiles.
She puts it on.
