Cameras to roll on Hard Core Logo 2 Thu Feb 18, 11:25 PM
SASKATCHEWAN (CBC) - Fourteen years after the release of Canadian punk rock mockumentary Hard Core Logo, cameras are about to roll in Saskatchewan on the sequel.
Shooting on Hard Core Logo 2 begins Feb. 22, with the bulk of filming to be done in the small communities of Watrous and Manitou Beach, north of Regina.
In an interview with CBC News, director Bruce McDonald described the comedy as "our little spooky, beautiful, kind of romantic, rock and roll ghost story."
McDonald joked that the spookiness began this month when a crew member encountered a self-proclaimed witch at Manitou Beach who convinced him he needed a "cleansing."
"Apparently, he's been entranced," McDonald said.
The original Hard Core Logo was well-reviewed when released in 1996 and has since gone on to attract a cult following. It tells the story of a famous punk band reuniting for a final tour, with disastrous results.
Some of its stars, including Callum Keith Rennie (Battlestar Galactica) and Hugh Dillon (Flashpoint ), have gone on to high-profile careers in television.
They won't have major roles in the sequel, but McDonald said he's still hoping their schedules could allow them to make appearances.
Returning in the key role of Bucky Haight is journeyman TV actor Julian Richings.
"Bucky is a kind of rock and roll royalty. He's like a Ron Wood from the Stones or a Johnny Thunder," McDonald said.
Logo 2 also stars real-life rockers Care Failure whose character is inspired by a dead rocker and her band Die Mannequin.
"It's sort of the story of her making a record, channeling his rock and roll spirit," McDonald said.
McDonald said one of the main settings will be Manitou Beach's famed dance hall, Danceland, where for decades bands have played and fans have danced on a wooden floor suspended over horsehair.
"This is an amazing place," McDonald said.

This all happened a few seconds after Renee had done the inevitable and offed Callum Keith Rennie’s Russian mobster Vladimir with the same bread knife. As soon as Vlad critiqued Renee’s bread cutting skills earlier in the episode I knew that knife was going to come back to haunt him, and haunt him it did as after getting rough with Renee one time to many she took the knife to his eye socket and then repeatedly stabbed his lifeless corpse with it, menacingly close to the genitals. Dark Renee means business.
Callum Keith Rennie was brilliant in his guest role and it’s a real shame he wasn’t around longer than three episodes, I’m quite alarmed at the speed they’re getting through villains this year though - we’re only up to hour 7 and we’ve already seen two tiers of bad guys (Davros and now Vladimir) meet their maker; and with Jack on his way to Bazhaev, its not looking to good for the patricidal Russian. I really hope that weaselly little Farhad doesn’t turn out to be the kingpin this season because he’s about the least convincing bad guy 24’s ever had, and let’s not forget that they once had Kal Penn as a terrorist.

Die Mannequin Starring In Hard Core Logo 2 02/19/10 12:05pm
by Kate Harper (CHARTattack)
Die Mannequin play a brand of in-your-face, punky sleaze-rock, so it's entirely appropriate they'll star in Hard Core Logo 2.
Shooting for the film, which is the sequel to 1996's Hard Core Logo, begins Monday (Feb. 22) in rural Saskatchewan, according to CBC News. The network reports Die Mannequin singer/guitarist Care Failure's character is apparently "inspired by a dead rocker," though not much else is known about her role so far.
Former Headstones frontman Hugh Dillon (Flashpoint) returns as Joe Dick, even though he shot himself at the end of Hard Core Logo. Um, sorry for the spoiler. (We aren't sure how he's still alive in the sequel, but we're sure director Bruce McDonald has figured out something awesome.)
Callum Keith Rennie (Battlestar Galactica) reprises his role as Billy Tallent. (His character obviously inspired a Toronto-area band to form their own band and become even more famous than the film...) Julian Richings will also once again play Bucky Haight, Dick's rock star idol.
Little is known about Hard Core Logo 2's plot, other than it centres on Dick and Haight's relationship.
There are reportedly plans for two more sequels, according to Dose.ca, including one about the characters' teenage daughters in the same vein as The Breakfast Club and Rock 'N' Roll High School. Dillon will star in all three sequels.
Die Mannequin's Fino + Bleed debut album came out last year.
