NORTH OF HOLLYWOOD: Production begins in Sask. on “Hard Core Logo” sequel2010 February 22
by Ian MacDonald
This past week, it was announced that cameras are, or will be (in the next couple of days) rolling on a follow-up to Bruce McDonald’s 1996 mock/rockumentary, “Hard Core Logo.” According to the province’s film and video development corporation, the sequel is scheduled to shoot in Saskatchewan, in the town of Watrous and the resort village of Manitou Beach.
First off, if you have never seen this film you’ve truly been missing out. It’s a Canadian cult classic and definitely among my desert-island, all-time, top 10 favourite films. Rumours of this sequel have floating around the industry for years now, so I’m not completely shocked that the project has finally taken off. However, in all honestly I’ve always sort of hoped this production would never come to fruition.
I mean, how many great films have been discredited or tainted because of ill-advised sequels or franchises? Now THAT would be an entertaining blog entry. I’ll tackle that list some other time.
The original “Hard Core Logo” starred former Headstones frontman and current “Flashpoint” star Hugh Dillon as Joe Dick and Callum Keith Rennie (Battlestar Galactica) as Billy Tallent (yes, this is where the band Billy Talent got their name from) and apparently both actors will reprise their roles in the sequel.
Now, considering Joe Dick shoots himself at the end of HCL, you may be wondering how his character will be worked back into the story line. Sorry about the spoiler just then, but really, it’s your own fault.
Turns out “Hard Core Logo 2″ will star Care Failure (of Die Mannequin) who will essentially play herself - an in-your-face, punk singer/songwriter - who is “inspired by a dead rocker” while recording her latest album. Here are a couple of quotes by McDonald from a recent EyeWeekly.com interview:
“Care Failure and her band Die Mannequin play themselves - they’re recording an album with Bucky and I’m documenting it. Bucky Haight, who is the mentor in the original, becomes one of the major characters. I become a major character, too - I play the filmmaker.”
“I’d done a couple of things with Die Mannequin and I just really got on with them and liked their attitude. I thought, hey, if we’re going to do a sequel for Hard Core Logo, let’s do the flipside. The first one is masculine, Canadian and on the road. The second could be feminine, American and in the studio!” (Source: EyeWeekly.com)
Last year McDonald directed an episode for City Sonic TV featuring Die Mannequin - check out the clip below for a sample of that - and I have to admit, after watching this short video and doing a little research, I am now far less nervous about this sequel than I was when I first started to write this entry.
McDonald definitely has a signature visual style and I think Failure might just be the perfect subject for it.
I guess we’ll wait and see.
