I went to the cathedral in York when I was in England, and it was worth it. We took the tour with this old guy who knew everything about the place and showed us a whole bunch of things we wouldn't have ordiarily noticed.
Paying to go into the cathedrals really bugged me about England. My last day in London is now called, "The Day I Almost Saw Westminster Abbey" In London, I had to pay to get into almost everything except for Tate Modern. I didn't go to the other museums because I knew they would eat up all my time. My one major regret in Paris is not spending more time in the Louvre, on a day that the exhibits I really wanted to see were open. I didn't want that to happen in London so just avoided the big museums. Unfortunately, there are still a lot of things there I want to see. Oh well!
Yeah...it's a real shame they make you pay, but I suppose it is how they keep them up...though the one in York had quite a bit of scaffolding and renovation being done so I wonder if they are keeping it up or just fixing when they have to.
I've barely been in the Louvre and hope to go again before I leave Paris...hopefully on that wonderful first sunday of the month when it's free. :) Isn't it always that way about trips? You never see everything that you wanted to, I suppose it's that way so we'll want to go back.
The trains should be fun actually, one day I'm going to spend entirely on the train going back and forth to one place because it's actually the view from the train that is the best part...hopefully the weather will cooperate. :)

Train wise . . . Vive le Deutsche Bahn!
That aside, I hope you continue to enjoy England!
