Hey Nicole! Seriously, I've dreamed a few times of owning my own LYS... I've even scouted out locations before... *sigh* Though my timing might not be right, I hope your dream comes true
( ... )
You hit the nail on the head, Mary. I had all those ideas in mind already - I guess birds of a feather knit together! lol Thanks for the reinforcement.
No need to pimp anyone - I'll be more than happy to pay a competitive wage to the right people. And anyone who is interested in inspiring other knitters is the right person! The computer skills are a bonus. Especially these days when the quality of your website says a lot about your business.
My favourite LYS back in Boston was endearing to me entirely b/c of the staff. The two owners were SO friendly, helpful and encouraging to be as a novice, it really made going there a joy and I gave them as much of my business as possible. It was a tiny place that didn't have a HUGE selection, but what they did have was diverse and interesting enough that I never felt deprived. (For the record, it's this place: http://www.knitroomboston.com - their website isn't great, but what the hey.)
I agree with Mary that a good LYS should have space and designated times for free knitting meet-ups. It creates a good community atmosphere, inspires loyalty, and gets die-hards and newbies alike into your shop on a regular basis, which can only result in increased sales.
Carolyn (who'd be happy to pimp herself out as well...;) )
FREE comfy, cozy knitting space in the store is on my priority list. There would be designated times where a FREE instructor would be present too. I don't believe in charging people to knit in your store. Imagine a giant drop-in , 7 days a week knitting club!
Boy, the wheels a turning now!
You've been duly added to my potential staff list :-)

Never fear, Robin! I will be in touch with you. My "real" life (school, work, boyfriend, etc.) keep demanding my time and messing with my knitterly intentions (I really like that, by the way - there may be a name for the store in there somewhere....hmmm)
Hang in there - we will chat soon (I can always use an excuse to pry my nose out of my books ;-)

I have many of the same issues with Beehive. They have a beautiful store, but it can be overwhelming at times.
Hope to see you tomorrow night! (I often have trouble getting there myself, but it's always worth it when I do!)
Cheers, Nicole

I'm very keen to support local suppliers. I have some amazing alpaca yarn from a Vancouver Island source. The texture is to die for!
