The philosophy behind the idea is rather intriguing and at the same time extremely scary. I can understand the removal of priviledges or choices to better assert dominance, but to take it to such a severe degree is beyond unnessacery.

I consider myself to have a very altruistic personality, but I hope I would be able to provide better service as a submissive with my own intellect than as you aptly put "a blank slate". To completely remove a person's sense of identity seems too radical to even consider in a practical manner.

Hmm, I should do a term paper on this concept at some point. =)

I bet that paper would get some attention. "The Modality of Consent: How Far is too Far"

Gah! That is the exact thing I was thinking about. You just put it in prettier words. I don't know where I could use this paper, maybe in my conditioning class(if we have a term paper, can't remember)?

I just finished a book on a similar topic so getting a more indepth view of the actual psychological principles being used would be very interesting. I doubt I would be able to get away with it, but I wouldn't mind doing this for my master's thesis either if I can find enough information to support it. Think I could convince any university to let me do this? =P

Go to Berkely...I'm pretty sure they'll let you do anything there. And I'm sure you could frame it as something other than a bdsm thing. How about training for the armed forces, or hell, going to grad school...stressful things that condition the mind. The world is power imbalanced, you can find that thesis anywhere.

Maybe I ought to spend time reading more than the site's home page, but I'd propose: there are always people who want to give up control to another person. And there are always people who want to take this control. Most people's relationship with religion exhibits this. Other deferments of free will can be seen in corporate america or subscription belief sets wrapped up in social identities. Likewise there will always be people at the opposite extreme, who do not accept roles and want true equality (and fell into this trap for a long time). ANd then there are the people in the middle, who I like to think of as finding that healthy balance. They may be leaders, they may be followers; doms, subs; tops, bottoms: they still recognize the benefit of autonomy and free will, however, in context of our humanity and personal responsibility.

So, in short, I agree with you, although I acknowledge(with an obligatory challenge) the place of those who fall to other extremes.
