Various people on my friends list have been complaining about their kids' school districts closing for the cold. You'll be happy to know it's a cross-cultural and -climate phenomenon. The parents that I know here were complaining because the schools closed-and their cutoff is a windchill of −45ºC ( Read more... )

They cancelled elementary ice skating (it's an outdoor rink) in our district, as well as keeping the younglings inside for recess. Soccer in the gymnasium instead of ruckus on the playground. It is cold, but not enough to cancel school.

I don't think my kids knew real cold until we went to Quebec last winter.

My brother-the-sous-chef-and-hillbilly-farmer just posted to the fambly maillist that the air temperature in Greenwich, where he lives, was -22. That's before factoring in wind chill...

I'm almost physically restraining myself from gloating. It was somewhere around 55 farenheit here earlier today. On the other hand, even though we have less snow, we have more, you know, major geo-political crisis.
