So did he sign a contract giving them exclusive rights to make money off his name when he accepted their scholarship?

I don't know how exactly it was worded (RenGeek -- do you?) but I strongly suspect he allowed them to do it (at least non-exclusively) while at the same time he agreed to live under the NCAA regs for eligibility, which in effect denied him the ability to do said same
