Spoke to a farmer from Tarrea, who explained the weird swimming-pool-like structure.

It is a holding tank for oysters. After a net full of oysters has been harvested, it can be left in the tank for some time, guaranteeing that the oysters will remain totally fresh until the market is right. It is a fairly recent innovation, the farmer guessed that the practice was introduced [and the tanks built] as recently as 15 to 20 years ago.

There are similar structures at Corraun Point, and either side of Tarrea pier. The one at the North of Tarrea pier was holding about a dozen nets of oysters when I looked this week.
