I keep telling myself I need to get back into LJ rather than Facebook, as the conversations here are much more useful. This, of course, requires I actually do something with LJ rather than think about doing something about LJ.

So here's a contribution, based on some discussion elsewhere.

Makes sense, though i'd probably also say that problems develop in most social systems when the society gets too big for individuals to have a personal vested interest in each other's well being. If i'm causing problems for someone i've met at some point, whose friends i know, that's a lot harder to live with than if i'm causing problems for some nameless individual that i'm not personally invested in. Folks have done studies that seem to indicate that most people can't maintain any personal investment in more than about 250 people at a time, give or take. If the person you're hurting isn't one of them, you'll probably find it easier to ignore their needs and do whatever you want
