I saw Leonard Cohen in concert this evening. While I will likely remember this concert forever, the funny thing is, most every song he played evoked other memories.
While driving after our first date, we stopped at a red light. Our eyes met several times throughout the night, confirming that our lips would follow suit-but as with so many things, the timing was never quite right. The light waited patiently while "So Long, Marianne" started to play.
The light would not change til we fulfilled the promise our eyes had made earlier and I kept my foot rooted on the brake. "I love this song..." she started to say. I didn't let her finish.
The album version of "So Long, Marianne" is five minutes and forty one seconds. This time, it could have been forty one minutes and five seconds. The light changed several times while we kissed in the middle of the road. Other drivers angrily honked and eventually drove around us. We were aware of them, but there wasn't enough room between us for them at this moment. After a night of interruptions and putting off what was supposed to have happened-nothing was going to stop this moment-except for the end of the song.
I have many other very happy memories of Leonard Cohen songs that were brought out tonight, but this one might be the best memory of a song I've ever had.
