I've tried to adhere fairly closely to the zero-scaping guidelines for irrigation free landscaping. What made last summer so touch and go was that most drought resistant plants are drought resistant "once established," which is not a clearly defined term. Several supposedly drought resistant plants turned to potpourri the moment I stopped watering them.

Typical of all things with this house, there is a irrigation system control next to the outside spigot, but no sign of where water would come out if I were to go to the effort of hooking it back up. I suspect I would get a geyser somewhere in the middle of the lawn.

yeah "once established" can mean about 2 years. Or that was my experience.. Though after the first summer it seemed to also mean that I could ignore them some but then they didn't grow at all.
Mint though, that shit will grow anywhere!

ah you're lucky! my "gardening" is limited to picking eggshells out of the astroturf carpeting in my kitchen.
