things that have damaged us as children

Thanks to something brought up in a recent discussion, I can't stop thinking about those awful, awful Fun Fruit trees from the commercials. This has of course triggered a rant, and I warn you not to read on if you're offended by the word "crap ( Read more... )

I know it's a little later on the timeline, but I would like to add that I am forever damaged by Fragglerock... tiny, hairy little muppets jerking about like herione addicts having a siezure. Awful. And these thing supposedly lived in your house! For a long time, I was very frightened that my house was infested with Fraggles, and that they would come eat my feet off in the night.

doozers live in your sinuses, gorgs eat babies and the trash heap is sprouting in my fat roomate's moist folds.

if you think fraggles are bad, i intentionally left out all manner of god-awful pseudo-muppet-based children's shows that were far worse, mostly because i have very scattered (but still damaging) memories of them.
but i'll save my tirade about the Krofft Puppets later, when my soul is more able to take the punishment.

Oh, I love the Fraggles! But then again I am fond of trash heaps and edible structures. And i am completely off my rocker.

I was also rather fond of Land of the Lost back in the day, but Sid & Marty Kroft were pretty scary folk.

I am sad that Captain Kangaroo died.

Anybody remember Jason of Star Command?

land of the lost was awful. the entire cast was awful. the special effects were awful even for their time. the "bad guys" were crappy lizard things that did nothing more than hiss intermittently and advance as slowly as geriatric zombies. and don't forget their hideous, brown, fur-covered cave boy friend. the sight of that thing made me want to claw my eyes out and trepan myself with a concrete auger ( ... )

"magic" my ass. god only knows how many other young minds were warped and ruined by this type of crap. it doesn't take much to interest or amuse children, granted, but certain themes should be avoided. while not necessarily sexually explicit or violent, some themes are just bad for the sanity. the big one would have to be Talking Food ( ... )

just because some parents beat their children doesn't mean they care.

i admit that there's a fine line between discipline and abuse, but i'd have to say i far prefer the company of people who were smacked a little too often to those who were never smacked at all.maybe if we get lucky the government will step in and tell us exactly how to rear our children.

Ayn had a lot of valid points about how helping people is the same as diminishing them, but her "hero" characters were psychologically impossible. i preferred "the fountainhead" over atlas. when reading her, it's important to keep in mind that she was a bitter, joyless person ( ... )

i suggest you run out and get one of the transformers:alternators line. they basically had automotive engineers redesign the old autobots completely. they're fucking amazing. sideswipe is now a dodge viper. i swear that if you look at them in car mode, you'd just think it was a high-end car model. detailed interiors and everything. plus the robot modes are actually POSEABLE. like flexible-thumb crazy kung-fu move poseable. i almost died when i got the new optimus prime. i think i neglected lex for a week after i picked that up. i even told her that i was dumping her for optimus.heh.let's see HER open her chest to reveal a removable, openable light-up autobot matrix. actually, that would be gross.
