I'm pro choice. However prevention is the best method of contraception. I don't think the limit should be lowered as most cases of late abortion are on medical grounds.(according to the figures I studdied at uni).
> most cases of late abortion are on medical grounds
Yes. Back in the early seventies the reason for late abortion was women being refused early abortions by their own GPs and having to go searching around for a doctor who would agree to sign the forms. Things are very much improved now.
Interesting chart here which shows how late terminations decrease as early ones increase.
> However prevention is the best method of contraception.
Absolutely. Given the health risks associated with even early abortions only an idiot would prefer abortion over contraception. But it has to be there because accidents can happen, no method of contraception is 100% reliable, and also, regrettably, because rape exists.
Anyone having sex should understand and accept the consequences, casual or otherwise that no contraception is 100% safe. Not only that but condoms should be used at all times with regard to casual sex. Only once everyone is fully educated and stocked up with them will STD rates start to fall. (that is if they choose to use them - argh!)
After all it only takes one mistake and you have to live with the consequences for the rest of your life (what ever they maybe)....
Well, it's not quite that simple. There are a lot of stupid people out there, after all...
But yes, education about contraception and making condoms etc easily available is the best way to reduce the abortion rate (as well as STD rate, teenage pregnancy rate, and most of the other things that politicians have moral panics about as elections loom.)
I think the Catholic rules on contraception are a clear example of why a celibate clergy is a really bad idea. If any priest or pope had had to change nappies at 4am for months on end you could bet that they would be in favour of birth control after that... :-)
