Having had a chance to see both the european and American coverage of this event what sickens me the most is the absolute, undisguised glee the media has over having something to talk about. At least on the international airwaves all of the clips from the US have shown an utter lack of sympathy or sincerity on the part of those presenting the news. They seem to have looked for every opportunity to keep the story going, and it doesn't surprise me in the least that they jumped at this.
To still seek Journalistic Integrity out of the television news media seems a lost effort to me. Geraldo Rivera anyone?
When I watch the 11:00 news I can guarantee 15 minutes of local and national sports, at least 2 articles on charming or wacky animals, 5 minutes of weather, and a cross-section of the most lethal stories available nationwide. On an especially relevant day, one might witness a 10 to 15 second blip on the subject of Iraq: "50 dead in a car bombing, 8 soldiers wounded in Baghdad, and now here's a really funny squirrel who sings opera."
