She uses stellar terms like "good ol' fashioned southern..." and hires black women to be dressed as Mamies, and it's all ok because the guys were going to be in tuxes? no.

Now, I'm not shocked at her use of the word. This IS the south. IF that were all this was, I'd be over it already, because you get that a lot in the south. But her "Good ol' fashioned southern" party?

No. Nonononononononono. no.

I hadn't heard of this bullshit from Anne Rice about this, wow. I am floored. I can't understand the people standing up for Paula Deen- ok, I get the folks whining about freedom of speech, but everyone else sounds like they're replying while thinking about all the racial jokes they've ever said and justifying them as well as Paula Deen. Disgusting. "She's from a different time!" is the biggest reason I've seen thrown around, as if she hadn't lived through the civil rights era and has been transplanted here straight from 1886 or something. Old, barely-in-touch-with-reality granny racists are bad enough, but pretending that such a huge television star doesn't know better, and hasn't at least been coached to keep her racist bullshit inside her sick head, well. Come on ( ... )

The Paula Deen fiasco has caused an out and out war between my mother and I.
Sure you can hold on to your beloved, racist vocabulary. But I won't be around to hear it.

Just say "Mom, give it 10-15 minutes, no judgment, and read the entirety and how many specifics of this complaint."

There's no way she couldn't be appalled after that. Theres so many things in there that are absolutely horrifying.

My mother thinks the "n-word" is a fine way to describe "lazy people of color." "I call them as I see them." "Paula Deen must have had some justification."

Just getting her to understand why the word itself is not okay is actually beyond me.
