If you think about it, print was a record of the past, while early film and live broadcasts attempted to record the present. Now digital filmmaking attempts to record another version of reality, but from a retrospective viewpoint. After all to use digital software you have to first record live action footage and then add in CGI effects. This ( Read more... )

I find it funny how 'reality' tv shows today are rarely true representations of reality. I was listening to the commentary of a show called the Real World and how the editors of the show edited a scene to make it appear that a female cast member was listening in on a conversation about her. Yet, this gossip scene in reality never occurred in the same area as this other cast member. They fabricated a story out of real footage but presented it to the public as reality. Makes me wonder what the real news is out here- as far as I know, Britney Spears could have disappeared from the planet over a year ago and no one really knows the truth... Oh celebrity news, so much fun to digest. Got to love the Soup.

Not to mention that "reality" television shows are all staged. They have "writers" that cook up a story line and then the editors go into the cutting room and trim down a whole day or week's worth of footage in order to create something that follows the pre-written script. So if the script calls for Jane Doe to be portrayed as a psychotic, hysterical she-devil that week, then the spin doctors will go about editing in order to create that illusion.

There's also the idea that reality television isn't the same as live television. These shows take place months before they're broadcast, except maybe for the big "two-hour live" finale. They cast and start producing shows like Project Runway in July, so that by the time Fall Fashion Week comes around, they've already got their Final Four. Meanwhile, the television series has own shown the first three episodes and a marathon of the old seasons while the editors race to get new work in the can.

Some days I wonder if anything on the television can be considered real.

Dr. Foys put a link on an earlier blog about hyper-reality. It was an interesting wikipedia article. It goes right along with what we are all saying. Reality? --- Whose?
