Hakkai woke in a cold sweat, gasping for breath, his good eye wide with shock, his bad eye throbbing in pain. That damned dream again. Gojyo, covered in blood… Panicked, he started frantically grasping for his left ear to make sure his limiters were still in place, but his hand was stuck, stuck in something long and tangled…
“OW! Jesus fuck, Hakkai, will you wake up! That’s my hair!”
Long and tangled… Hakkai blinked. Gojyo was half on top of him, writhing in agony, grasping Hakkai’s arm with both hands, trying desperately to loosen the tight fingers fisted in his snarled red hair.
“Gojyo… I-I’m sorry…” Unclenching his fist, he let Gojyo disentangle himself, closing his eyes and taking several deep breaths. He reached across with his right arm to check his ear. One, two, three. They were all there. A heavy sigh of relief escaped him.
It's always the same dream. Gojyo was in terrible, terrible danger, and Hakkai couldn’t get to him, no matter how hard he tried, no matter what course of action he took. There was something that Hakkai had to do that was more important - more important than Gojyo dying - and yet Hakkai could never remember what that could possibly be upon awakening. The details sometimes changed - sometimes Hakuryuu was there, and Gojyo’s hair was dark and short instead of long and red, but it always ended the same way. No matter what Hakkai did, no matter how fast he ran to get there, a huge, terrifying monster swept down on top of Gojyo, and the blood…
“Hakkai! Talk to me, man! You’re freaking me out, here!” Gojyo was straddling him, his long fingers gripping Hakkai’s shoulders, trying to get him to stop shaking.
Hakkai reached up to touch Gojyo’s face with a quivering hand, pushing a stray lock of red behind his ear. “Gojyo…” He whispered his name like an incantation. “I’m so sorry, your hair…”
“Fuck, forget about my hair, okay? Are you all right?”
“Gojyo. Promise me something.” Don’t die on me. Please don’t die.
“Anything.”
“Please don’t…" Please don’t die. "Don’t... ever cut your hair short.”
“What? Why…? What the hell does this have to do with…?”
“Gojyo, please.” Don’t die.
“All right, all right! I wont cut it. I wasn’t planning on it! God, you’re so weird sometimes…!”
Hakkai held Gojyo as tightly as he could, burying his head in his lover’s soft crimson hair. Gojyo’s strong arms wound around him and he shook all over with relief. Alive. He’s alive, and breathing, and his hair is still long and as red as sin. Please, God, if you exist, don’t take him away from me. Please. Not this time.
A tear slipped down his cheek, which he quickly brushed away.
“I’m not letting you go.”
“Good, cuz I got nowhere else to go. You sure you’re okay?”
“Yes.” As long as you’re still breathing, yes. Yes.
