Joseph Kosuth
Thanks to Roxanne, I have been introduced to yet another wonderful Neon artist (and just plain artist in general!) -
Here is a link for an article addressing the work she showed me first, which I am quite infatuated with. What a great execution. I can officially shoot myself for not going to the Venice Biennale while I was there. I was in Venice, but I was lost in the heat and to be honest the place seems like a labyrinth. It's romantic, but so crowded, hot, and then at night completely silent and dark. The smaller islands are unreal though. Still, finding places meant understanding italian directions, and taking small boats to get to exhibitions - which right now sounds fabulous, but at the time I was exhausted. I took my time and took it all in without rush. I think we spent two hours just hanging out in the bell tower, looking over everything.
Still, I'm mentally shooting myself. Oh well. Perhaps I'll go back for the next one, we can make that a goal.
I was shown this article the other day, by the way, about Carnival going on right now (madness!) and how Coolio ("Of Gangsters Paradise fame" it literally said) was a special guest at the opening festival, and was hanging high above the Carnival paraders in San Marco throwing confetti out over everyone. a) Italians are some crazy folk, and b) things like that give me hope for my life, hah.
Article on "The Language of Equilibrium"
"At first the viewer confronts the phonetics (pronunciation),
etymology (root), syntax (grammar) and semantics (meaning) of water in
three languages. Soon after, references to water are discursively invaded
not only by physical water enveloping the island, but by water contained
within the physical corpus of the viewer. Topography, mind and body are
interwoven uncannily, evoking the range of conjectures put forth by the
Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein."
Yow. Semantics and Language?....::sigh::
I am trying everything to find the full script of what the text says, but cannot. I really want it though, as I'm very interested in the translation from english to italian and back. Italian language is so incredibly attractive!

A Last Parting Look (for C.D.)
For this work, Kosuth employed a text of Charles Dickens. Kosuth's choice of material reflects its location deep within the cityscape of Dickensian London, the location of both Dickens's early years as well as much of the fictional world that he created.
Taken from the closing chapter of The Pickwick Papers, the text reads:
'There are dark shadows on the earth but its lights are stronger in the contrast. Some men, like bats or owls, have better eyes for the darkness than for the light. We, who have no such optical powers, are better pleased to take our last parting look at the visionary companions of many solitary hours, when the brief sunshine of the world is blazing full upon them.'
He is of fame for One and three chairs presentation, which refers to Platos theory of form, which we discussed yesterday in Aesthetics course in relation to the arts and his discussion of their negative impact on society/the self in The Republic.
