I think I'm going to stop buying books of Neil Gaiman.

After reading Good Omens, and already being a Pratchett-fan, I really wanted to like Gaiman's books. He is a good writer and clever, but his books are just too dark and creepy for me. The funny thing is that I knew this right after the first book, yet I've kept on buying them anyway. But I've ( Read more... )

Have you read Fragile Things? It has some of his better short stories (in my opinion), not all of which are as dark and creepy as most of his novels. Also, Stardust is very fairy-tale-like in style, and while it has some dark elements, it strikes me as the lightest of his books. If those are too dark and creepy for you, then yeah. Keep the bookshelf space for books you'll actually enjoy. =)

Yes, I have read Fragile Things. (I love short stories!) A study in emerald was fiendishly clever, I thought, although The monarch of the glen was the best of the lot IMO. But it was most specifically The problem of Susan that rather unsettled me greatly and made me consider that perhaps this wasn't the stuff for me.

Stardust was a good book, and if all of his were like that, then I don't doubt I'd keep reading. But it is indeed considered his lightest book. I remember reading Coraline and stopping half-way to look at the cover again, thinking 'This is for kids?!'

Kids these days... clearly made out of sterner stuff than me... ;-)
