Well, I was really not comfortable with being party to someone's deportation. Also, I felt the program needed to know if they are letting people slip through the cracks and end up at BA795 without the proper skill set. I had a discussion with my Professor about it and he in turn spoke with the Dean of the department. They put him on an individual project he could begin immediately. So, if he still gets deported, it's 1000% on him!
Let me add that while I'm kind of a sucker, I ultimately made the decision to dismiss him from the group because of the blow to morale his cruising was having on my two team members carrying the workload with me. It makes no sense to punish the good people to accomodate the useless. The crazy part was that the Professor had outlined a whole protocol for me to follow, including a written notice, task list, and timeline to be accomplished. The Professor contacted me as soon as he looked over the time logs and peer reviews and told me it was ok to go ahead and fire him, and he'd support our decision. It's the first time that's happened in the program. Yikes!

And, because I love a trainwreck, what happened to the guy you had to fire? Did he get booted from the program? The country? The planet?
