After participating in fandom and Live Journal for a while, I've concluded I prefer staggered posting to cross posting.
As most veteran LJers know, cross posting is when you post your story to every available outlet on Live Journal at once. If I wrote a Pansy/Draco story, for example, I'd be cross posting if I posted a story summary and link today in
seaislewitch,
dransy,
frillypinkrobes,
draco_pansy and
slytherinlove. (Yes, I used to do this.)
Staggered posting is essentially the same, but it's a slow release. Staggered posting would be if I posted the story summary and link in
seaislewitch on Monday. Then on Friday, I would posted the same thing to
frillypinkrobes. Late next week, I might post it to
dransy.
Staggered posting may seem like more work, but it may help keep friends and acquire readers. Here are the reasons why:
1) You won't annoy people with your fic spam. The less pushy you are, the more likely someone might try your story. Does everyone everywhere need to know about it right then? Realise that most people who belong to
draco_pansy also belong to
frillypinkrobes. They may even be on your f-list, so they might get three of your story announcements consecutively on their friends page. If there's anything I've learned on LJ, it's that etiquette must to be observed.
2) People might not give your story a chance if they don't know who you are. Sad but true. If a reader sees a summary and link for your story on Monday, later on Friday and then again next week, the reader might actually give it a try because (Ta da!) your name and story are now familiar to them. Perhaps the reader didn't have time to read your story when it appeared Monday and Wednesday, but she might be reminded of your story on Friday and read it over the weekend. Essentially, staggered posting gives you repeated exposure.
Staggered posting: It's a good thing.
