“Ryeowook-sshi, may I speak to you for a moment?” Just a few simple words, not even just a simple name and his heart rate had already sped up. The pounding in his chest felt like it was at the volume of music at a rock concert. That added with his slightly trembling hands he hid behind his back, Yesung was a mess. He realized quickly though, those words were nothing to be anxious about compared to the waiting he was enduring…

It was the end of the school year, Yesung or as his teachers called him Kim Jong Woon, was in the same class as another student named Kim Ryeowook. The two knew of each other very well. Of course they would, they were in the same school for all of their primary school life, had been in the same class for every single year except for the previous one and they were even in chorus together. The same two boys though had never spoken to each other besides the required words that might transpire between classmates due to a teachers instruction.

Why had they never spoken to each other on a peer to peer level? Yesung held the answer to that. He was a chicken. A big, fat, apparently yellow, chicken. Yellow? He had no idea but just found the color fitting. Throughout the years Yesung came to admire Ryeowook, the quiet and shy student who was a bit more on the heavy side compared to the other students. That didn’t matter. Yesung surely wasn’t a bully and even if he had been, he knew he’d have to think twice once he heard the pure slice of cake, because little kids don’t think of heaven much, that came out of Ryeowook’s mouth when he sang. The younger boy was captivating and Yesung always rapt with attention grew envious. He wanted a voice like Ryeowook’s.

Being that they were both in chorus, day after day, year after year, they would hear the other sing. The teacher clearly showed her affection for her two star pupils but even though she praised them both equally, Yesung felt like Ryeowook was always ahead of him. He realized this to it’s fullest extent in their fourth year when the two were entered into a contest and even though they both represented their school, Ryeowook had clearly stolen the hearts of the audience and the judges. It was around this time that Kim Jong Woon claimed the name Yesung for himself and practiced harder than ever to catch up to Ryeowook. He wanted to be his equal. There was a knot in his chest whenever he thought about it and Yesung would always make a first with his hand, placing it over his chest when he could feel it. Comprehension on just what that was he didn’t know but it was almost the most profound whenever the two were in chorus practice he listened to Ryeowook sing.

One might think that Yesung would have come up to Ryeowook sometime during that fourth year and said something but he never could. The thought of speaking to his classmate who he admired so much always sent him in the other direction. Ryeowook on the other hand was completely oblivious to anything that was going on. Why wouldn’t he be? Yesung had never spoken to him, they weren’t friends either so he went on his merry way, smiling, singing, laughing with others as his days at school went on.

Another year came and went, days just kept passing Yesung by and no matter how much he wanted to become friends with Ryeowook he simply could never bring himself to utter a word let alone approach Ryeowook without a reason relating strictly to school. His approaches normally resulted in, him approaching, “Ryeowook-sshi?…” silence, the exchange of gazes as Ryeowook was curious and Yesung finally muttering something such as, “What were the pages for the math assignment today? I forgot to write them down.” Eyes were then down cast and his right foot would be trying to dig a hole in the hard floor.

Now it was the last day that Yesung would see Ryeowook as their primary school years were coming to an end. The days leading up he had been rather distraught over what to do. He had already promised himself that he would not only become Ryeowook’s equal but make friends with him as well. His confidence on the first part was pretty high as for the second part, his confidence plummeted through all the layers of the earth and rested at the core. Something about his classmate, it had to be those deep soulful eyes, always unsettled Yesung to where he could never accomplish his task.

It lead to this moment, this moment at their silly dance that they had every year for the leaving students who would be entering secondary school once summer was over. About half of the students thought the dance was stupid but everyone showed up anyways. They all wanted to be able to say goodbye to their friends and even though it was stupid, just a little show to make the adults feel like they accomplished something, the kids always had a good time. All of the classes were mixed in together for the dance which made it difficult to find one small person in the midst of such a big crowd. Yesung on the other hand, had kept his eyes on the one he wanted the whole entire time. He could always spot where Kim Ryeowook was, it was just natural.

Like right now, Kim Ryeowook was awkwardly dancing with a girl who had asked him to dance with her. It made Yesung smile and frown all at once. He smiled because seeing an awkward Ryeowook was cute, while in the next breath he would like the girl to disappear because he needed to speak to Ryeowook. Steeling his eyes, putting a stop on his nerves, or ignoring them as much as he could. Yesung finally made his way over the one he envied for so long.

His words were so formal that even he wasn’t quite sure where they came from. As Yesung waited he tugged on the little bowtie his mother made him put on. Everyone was dressed in their nicest clothes because it was a dance after all. Ryeowook looked up, and turned around to the person who had spoken to him. “Oh, sure Jongwoon hyung.” A small smile graced his perfect lips that tinged everything he said with a sweet melody of their own. After excusing himself from his dance partner Ryeowook followed Jongwoon who led him right outside of the cafeteria that was being used as their dance floor.

Once the two little kids heard the doors shut with a click, their gazes met, as Ryeowook looked at Jongwoon in confusion as he had done so many other times over the years. Yesung’s heart beat wasn’t slowing down in his chest in the slightest but he was determined to say this to the boy standing in front of him. “What is it, you don’t want to miss the dance right?” Ryeowook asked wondering how much longer the silence was going to go on for. For a kid even a few seconds could feel like an hour. Impatient things that they were.

Yesung swallowed, cleared his throat, glanced down at his feet and tugged at his bowtie again. “Uh, can’t we, Ryeowook-sshi?” He asked hesitantly and a little quieter than he had anticipated. The response he received wasn’t the most intelligent. “Huh?..you know you can drop the -sshi, how long have we been in the same class now?” It was odd how polite Jongwoon was with him, was what Ryeowook thought but normally just chalked it up to him being an oddball. The more Ryeowook stood there the more he wanted to know what was going on, Jongwoon seemed uncomfortable and that annoyed him even though he couldn’t quite grasp why.

“I can? Oh uh okay…Ryeowook-s..Wook, will you be my friend?” the words finally stumbled out of his mouth. That was one of the things he wanted to ask. The most important one. Though as of the last few weeks a few other odd thoughts had been floating around in Yesung’s head. He would get to those later though. One step at a time.

One step at a time.

Ryeowook’s answer was instaneous. “Yes. Of course. Is that what you wanted to ask me? Man, you’re a real big dork you know that hyung?” laughter started to fill the air and Yesung would swear on his life nothing in this world could compare to how wonderful it sounded. A grin spread across his face and even though he was being laughed at Yesung didn’t care. Ryeowook had said yes. He said yes. Stumbling back, Yesung looked up at Ryeowook with wide eyes. He had almost fallen on his bottom after receiving a playful shove. “Aren’t we already friends?” He was shaking his head in disbelief of being asked that. To Ryeowook, even though they didn’t really talk about things besides school, they did speak, they had chorus together and in general they ended up spending a lot of time together because of school. The two were friends. What else would they be? Yesung scratched the back of his head and let out a nervous chuckle, “Uh, I guess so.” Who would have known it’d have been so easy. Ryeowook already thought they were friends even when he didn’t think the other really knew much of his existence.

A warm hand slipped into his and tugged it, “Come on, let’s go dance. I like this song don‘t you?” Yesung’s hand did what it wanted to and soon the twos fingers became entwined. He nodded, “I do.” he started to walk, following Ryeowook who pulled open the big cafeteria door and the music hit their eardrums at a much louder decibel that had the two starting to move with the music already. “Hey, Ryeowook-s- er Ryeowook, call me Yesung, okay?” He asked as they snaked their way through the crowd toward the middle of the dance floor where there was a gap. Ryeowook looked back at Yesung and nodded with a smile. “Sure, and call me Wook. I like the way you say it.” When these words reached his ears, Yesung couldn’t help but turn a light shade of pink. He was starting to recognize that his previous wanting of just friendship was quickly turning into a crush if it hadn’t always been one.

The two of them were inseparable for the rest of the dance. Yesung, truly enjoyed himself that day. It turned out that dances weren’t so stupid. In fact, they were wonderful events and this one was so special that he would remember it for all of his days to come. That day he had truly become friends with Kim Ryeowook and it was the beginning to a very long and entwined road together.
