Life is hardly that consistent that one statement can sum up all the trials that one might encounter. From person A, their skill with words could such that they could hurt another far more with them than they ever could physically. For person B, it could be the opposite. For the recipient, it depends entirely on what they have or haven't done to be receiving such harsh words or abuse. A guilty conscience is far worse than the punishment that could be enacted by another, after all.
So, my answer would be that I neither believe or disbelieve in that.
They only hurt if you let them hurt you. And how badly they cripple you depends on you, too.
I have heard some nasty things about myself before, and while that certainly is a mood-killer and a real downer, I never really let it stop me from doing what I thought was right.
...For the most part, people are capable of controlling their emotional responses. Not all people have figured it out, and most people can't do it completely. There's always the part that hurts, it's just a matter of how you're able to decide how much it should hurt.
...I think my friend Haseo is a great person to talk to about that. He's dealt with so much crap from so many people... but he's a good, honest, strong man and he doesn't deserve a single second of it.

Why do parents tell children that though? Isn't it practically lying?

I don't think that everyone has a say on how much they let things effect them though.
