Once a long time ago, I wrote to an author I really like, and have liked all my life. I was young and the year before I'd been very ill and nearly died, which changed some things for me

hmm..two words I don't buy in your sentence there, the first one being "lucky" (I'm truly not, in this sense at least) the second one being the choice of the word "instincts" on your part. ;P
Oh, that's right Isabeau, you have! I am going to enjoy going to your latest post so much when I come home, and watch your gorgeous pictures from something else than this tiny netbook screen.
I don't follow them all the time, just sometimes. It's scary, and people don't always like it. Although, I will say that when they do, they really do.
I just sent off a card to someone, prompted in just such a way, and I know there's a big chance it will fall flat, or that I myself will wonder, some days from now, why I felt I had to...
... oh well, I guess I'm glad I did, all the same.
That author couldn't get from your post card what you had intended for her to get, when you sent it, but she got *something* anyway.
... I am sobered to think of you being ill and nearly dying when you were younger. Life is fragile, but often we don't think about that fact.
I think I count the author experience a success, for lack of better words, but there have been other times where it's been moot, or even backfired. While my postcards are not always actual postcards (mostly the example with the author was), I'm glad you sent yours off, I've gotten them myself a few times in life (unexpected comments, hints, questions, gifts or notes, seemingly obscure, but coming from the right place. Sometimes disconcerting, because they can put you in a spot, emotionally or mentally)
About the illness: it turned out well, I was misdiagnosed and had a brush with bone daddy one night, but I was young and strong and recovered fairly fast.
Oh, I'm glad the author experience was a success--that's actually what I thought, too, from the author's remarks, but then I think I misunderstood/misread your reaction and thought that maybe it hadn't been what you hoped for. I'm glad that's not the case!
