1. I played Star Wars the Old Republic a bit this spring, but became really bored and gave it away to charity. I may just not be an MMO person

Agreed with 2, 3, 6 and 8 especially. At the same time, I think 3 and 8 illustrate some kind of paradoxical model in our current geist or whatnot, where active friendships are increasingly valuable, but increasingly difficult to maintain.
Oh, and if Jon really IS dead, I will eat a shoe. Pretty sure he (and Arya) are set up to be critical parts of book six (now it would be hilarious, and I could kind of see it, if it turns out Jon dies for real at the end of the next book or something)
I agree that he is not likely to be dead (yet). Interesting points on 3 and 8, why do you think friendships are increasingly difficult to maintain? Is it a sign of the time, or of our age or something else?
Well, tbf it's probably a sign that it's just more difficult for ME, per se---but I think it might be a combination of a) easier to cocoon/ access and interactions are increasingly semi-public and casual/passive at the same time instead of active necessarily---there are more distractions/people are busier and also people are more likely to feel like they CAN keep in touch with more people and maybe spread their own attentions and energies thin? Or inversely, if you don't follow the norm and try to be open to keeping in touch with anybody, you're seen as overly reclusive?
I think you have some points. For me, the distractions resonate. The Internet itself can definitely take a way time from rl interactions if I don't watch myself a bit.
It's okay Zap, I'm just so truly grateful that you'd want to give me even some short snippets, you are my only Mithlond friend! I'll just email you the 3 questions on fb as a private message and then you can answer as briefly or as lengthy as you want.
#3 - I have a hard time connecting with friends I made on LJ who switched to FB as their primary social network. There is a different feel and focus there, and the friendships didn't survive the change well. On the flip side, the real life relationships (ie mostly family) that were only the barest (but friendly) relationships seemed to improve with the little bit of effort ("like") that FB added to them.
I still hate FB.
#6 - I have not read the series or watched it. I do not intend on doing either despite the wall of people recommending them to me.
#8 - Same but not for the same reasons. It isn't because I have seen too many fucked up families (I grew up in a loving functional one) it's just that I never groked the whole "family first idea". It didn't set in my brain. I keep my mouth mostly shut about this too because I don't want to deal with the fall-out of being explicit about it. I value family-by-choice over other relationships.
I completely agree with your #3 comments, into every last detail.
I have a much easier time recommending the HBO series than the books. I like the books (overall) still, but the series is so well done that more people can close in on it, as long as they can stand sex and violence.
People who grew up in loving families and yet understand the value of chosen families have my respect.
Yeah..I don't believe I would be on fb anymore if it I wasn't an expat. I'm just disappointed at how lazy people have become. And also a little disgusted. I mean...they announce deaths, break ups and divorces there...Is it just me, or is that..I just don't know anymore.
The real name requirement killed it for me, and everything I know about FB (and a lot of the development of the internet over the last 10 years) tells me that never using my real name on the internet was a very good decision.
It was a very good decision. I used my real name for a brief time of a few years (I'm now under alias on social websites since a while back, a similar one to my lj alias), and I still regret the mark I made by those few years with my real name.
