I could tell almost immediately what was going through Christine O'Donnell's mind this week during the First Amendment controversy in her debate with Chris Coons.

O'Donnell is a literalist. She was trying to argue, like many conservative Christian politicians do, that the words "separation of church and state" are not in the constitution ( Read more... )

I think it boils down to O'Donnell just not being a very smart person. You're attributing too much to her -- I think it's more likely that she simply doesn't know all the specifics about the constitution and its amendments, though in her mind cherishes certain aspects about it, which we probably learned only indirectly through role models in her life. It doesn't sound like she's ever actually read it closely. By the way, have you?

I don't think the fact that she's not overly smart is new to her supporters. All they care about is the values she believes in, represents and is willing to fight for.

The Constitution? The US Constitution? You mean I could actually read it? I thought you needed special permission to do that. Where can I find a copy?

By being literal, she and others would also get rid of the Dept Education. Then, they could freely teach Religion in schools. Have you noticed, the same people who don't believe the 1st amendment is Separation of Church and State, also want to get rid of the Dept. of Education? Bush's entire administration was an attack on our senses, what is true, what is right, what is wrong. This is the next phase. Smacking down well established rules, to fill in the gray areas they created with their own truths ( ... )
