My favorite thing is how even when bad things happen to Toby, it never feels depressing. In fact, I find the way that Toby's life gets better as she lets people into her life is a really helpful perspective when I'm having trouble of my own.

They didn't mention the multiple long-standing mysteries, with deeply satisfying unspooling payoffs as we slowly learn more and more about what's going on. Ten books in, and we already feel rewarded for our attention by what we've learned so far, while simultaneously desperately wanting to know the rest!

That actions have consequences. This remark sometimes only seems to mean Bad Consequences, but what I love about the books is that actions have all kinds of consequences, good, bad, and sometimes neutral or just kind of sideways. But nothing falls aside or is forgotten; effects propagate on and on.

Ooh, yes, this too! I love that it is the kind of long series that has no default setting. Things are always changing.
